Job Summary

Responsible for providing an innovative and holistic approach to supporting student success for multi-ethnic students, first generation students, and underserved students. TRIO SSS Academic Coach will support student success by strategically contacting students during their academic terms while enrolled at Central Arizona College, providing learning opportunities focused on student success skills, digital literacy, growth mindset, interdependence, and soft skills, and connecting students to critical support services as they complete their pathway major or programs of study, improve academic standing, student retention, and graduation. The TRIO SSS program/ Coach will provide comprehensive academic support services to all program participants to include guidance on academic, personal, career and university transfer options leading students toward their career goals. Serve all students as a TRUE Learning Community by promoting student success through student learning, student engagement, student development, and student retention. This position is dependent upon TRIO SSS grant funding through the U S Department of Education.


  • Pro-actively communicates with assigned students (both individually and in groups virtually and in-person) to maximize enrollment, persistence, course success and retention. Implement academic success program, records maintenance, and resource materials for TRIO SSS students that promote learning and fulfill the program objectives. Maintain thorough documentation of all project activities and interactions with students.
  • Deliver proactive advising services, communicating respectfully and building relationships of trust with people of all cultures and abilities, affirming the worth and preserving the dignity of individuals, families, and communities. Design individual student success plans, document and track student progress against goals and program expectations outlined in success plans.
  • Use the early alert process to identify and follow up with at risk students in College Foundation courses (English, Reading and Math) including academic monitoring emails to all instructors for all enrolled coursework, and put in place appropriate interventions for success.
  • Engage assigned TRIO SSS student participants in learning, college navigation, tutoring, workshops, cultural events, and life support activities. Refer students to all services offered in TRIO SSS program and all resources necessary for their success at Central Arizona College. Assist with student eligibility screenings.
  • TRIO SSS will collaborate with student affairs, learning support, instructional personnel, and other college constituents to create, modify and support student success efforts, and conduct and present TRIO SSS program informational sessions to groups, classrooms, and relevant audiences.
  • Operate multiple college systems to retrieve, communicate and submit information/data (Blackboard, NEXUS, Office 365, Blumen, etc.)
  • Collect evidence, evaluate students, academic services operations, and processes; complete Blumen data entry; assist in designing metrics to measure quality of services; recommends improvements and modifications; summarizes findings and prepares related reports.
  • Actively participate in all TRIO SSS trainings through the U S Department of Education, COE, WESTOP, and CAC professional learning opportunities focused on equity and inclusion, learning support, and Online learning.
  • Researches and recommends resolutions for technically difficult and complex student concerns. Analyzes confidential student information; identifies issues and discrepancies; formulates plans to support TRIO student's success.
  • Coordination/Participation in the Summer Bridge Residential Program to include student application review, student mentor selection and training, event/ workshop program planning and evaluation; TRIO SSS program and event planning for university tours, applications, financial literacy, and enrichment or co-curricular events. Ability to prioritize, plan, organize, and complete tasks to meet timelines.
  • The position may perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position to include participating in committee assignments and retention of students.
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree; desirably in Education, Counseling, Guidance, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.

    EXPERIENCE: One (1) year applicable experience. Experience can include, but is not limited to, post-secondary student services experience in admissions, advising, career services, counseling, financial aid, recruitment, registration, and TRIO Student Support Service Programs (TRIO). Other examples of related experience include student guidance in a secondary school setting.

    An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.

    SALARY: $48,026.00 - $50,908.00 (Dependent upon qualifications)

  • Skills: Microsoft Office products, social media, electronic mail system, and student database systems. Ability to maintain regular, punctual, and reliable attendance.
  • Knowledge of TRIO Student Support Services programs and related federal regulations. Experience with student development theory and best practices in higher education.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of learning and/or teaching students and staff.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in conducting research, in the use of the internet as a tool, and in report preparation.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices in the use of technology in instruction/ presentations.
  • Knowledge of techniques and methodologies of student assessment.
  • Knowledge and skill in developing instructional programs, planning, evaluation, and review with the ability to produce new, imaginative, or innovative solutions different from traditional approaches
  • Knowledge and skill in operating a variety of multimedia equipment, computer systems, hardware, and relevant software applications.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with first generation students, staff, community leaders, faculty, and the public. Skill working in a diverse multi-ethnic and multi-cultural population.
