Job Description:

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks a Part-Time Access Services Associate for the Mother Theresa Hackelmeier Memorial Library to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity.

Hackelmeier Memorial Library is hiring 3-4 part-time employees to cover evening shifts (5PM-midnight).

This position is a combination of customer service and building oversight. Library Associates are non-undergraduate employees responsible for the library building after hours. They work closely with undergraduate student employees and focus on front-line customer service, including circulation (checking items in and out) and interlibrary loan (borrowing from and lending to other libraries). Library Associates are responsible for closing the library building.

Library Associates will work a consistent weekly schedule. The exact number of scheduled hours will be established based on the associate's availability and the library's need, but will range from a minimum of 8 hours to a maximum of 25 per week. This position will work from August 8- December 16, 2022, and from January 9 - May 19, 2023.

The Access Services team is led by a librarian and includes non-student associates and 10-15 student workers. Library Associates will report to the Access Services Librarian.

Though experience in libraries (either as an employee or library user) is desired for this position, it's not required. Training will be provided.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively engages the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values, honoring the legacy of the founding congregation, promoting unity in diversity, and integrating the Catholic Franciscan intellectual traditions in courses, programs, and services.
  • Promptly and accurately retrieve and process interlibrary loan requests during each shift.
  • Assist students, faculty, and staff with locating and checking out books and other items. Provide front-line desk assistance as necessary.
  • Act as building supervisor during shifts.
  • Close the library on scheduled days, following designated procedures.
  • Provide front-line desk assistance, including assisting patrons with library resources and equipment.
  • Oversee and coordinate tasks for student workers.
  • Collect statistical data about building and resource use. Oversee data collection by student workers.
  • Monitor building and patron safety conditions, reporting issues to the Director of Library Services, Campus Operations, Information Technology, or Marian University Police Department as necessary.
  • Assist librarians with projects on an as-needed basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Marian University.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Experience using online systems and the ability to quickly learn new systems and software.
  • Prior customer service employment experience and demonstrated customer service excellence.
  • Experience using a school, public, or academic library.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience problem solving with a team.

Pay Rate: $16.00/hour
