Summary Statement

Parks and Recreation's AdVenture Program is devoted to providing adaptive lifestyle enrichment opportunities to our community. We are looking to partner with someone who is passionate about providing adaptive classes at our Fort Boise Community Center. The successful candidate will fill the role of Adaptive Recreation Fitness Instructor.

  • Leads programs for youth and adults with disabilities at community centers and in the community
  • Assists supervisor and staff in coordinating safe, fun, and appropriate activities
  • Work is performed using independent judgment and discretion
  • This position is designated as At-Will
  • Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-5:15 p.m.


Essential Functions

Instructs classes for youth or adults with intellectual disabilities in the fields of cooking, dance, music, art or fitness. (45%)

Leads groups of individuals with disabilities in a community setting. Ensures the safety and well-being of clients. Recognizes and redirects client misbehavior. Properly manages money for group activities in the community. (45%)

Works one-on-one with individuals with disabilities so they can fully integrate into Boise Parks and Recreation programs. (10%)

Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time. Total Percentage = 100%

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • 1 year of experience volunteering or working with youth or individuals with disabilities
  • High school diploma, GED, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Working knowledge of best practices for teaching an individual with an intellectual or physical disability
  • Subject matter such as cooking, dance, drumming, art, or fitness
  • Inclusion techniques that work well with youth or adults with intellectual disabilities
Ability
  • Provide instruction to youth and adults with disabilities
  • Communicate and establish rapport with participants of all ages and ability levels
  • Interact with the public, coworkers, and supervisors in a friendly and tactful manner
  • Recognize and redirect misbehavior
  • Use strong human relations and organizational skills
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public, and other organizations
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies, and regulations
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance
  • Perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • 2 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities
  • 2 years of experience teaching classes or leading programs with multiple participants
  • Possession of current certification in CPR/First Aid
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
  • City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
  • Drug-Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug-Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety-sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post - Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hiring. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.
This position has responsibilities that require the person to work with minors or individuals with disabilities.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is rarely lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds. The noise level is always moderate. Work includes the sensory ability to talk and hear. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, and walk.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions and outdoor weather conditions. Will be leading programs inside community centers and outside.
This position works: evenings and weekends as needed.
