Responsibilities

We work on a flexible and multifaceted portfolio of challenges that include, but are not limited to:

  • Enabling Digital Health by developing an ecosystem of data science capabilities for improved clinical trial design, execution and monitoring that includes operation and clinical data, real-world evidence, remote monitoring, telemedicine, medical and wearable devices to augment trials.
  • Researching and developing data science algorithms using high-frequency structured and unstructured data generated from trials to achieve goals on patient centricity, sustainability and improved clinical trial design and execution
  • Developing and implementing end-to-end automation and integration of our algorithms in products using state-of-the-art serverless architectures in cloud platforms such as AWS
  • Supporting individual therapeutic areas and study teams to solve varied challenges using statistics, data sciences and machine learning

These challenges will require you to:
  • Lead, advise on, investigate the feasibility of, and deliver data science solutions and ideas that drive value to AstraZeneca
  • Apply a range of data science methodologies, developing novel data science solutions where off- the-shelf methodologies do not fit
  • Translate unstructured, sophisticated business problems into the appropriate data problems, model, and analytical solutions
  • Develop, implement, and maintain tools and algorithms in a manner which meets regulatory and evidential requirements
  • Clearly and objectively communicate results, as well as their associated uncertainties and limitations. Constructively collaborate with a diverse set of users (global functions and local marketing companies) and partners enabling effective consensus, conflict resolution and alignment to project goals
  • Review and develop working practices to ensure that data science work is delivered to robust quality standards

Essential:
  • PhD/MS in machine learning, computer science, statistics, physics, engineering or a related computational subject area. Applicants who have proven experience in data science and high proficiency in predictive modelling and machine learning are encouraged to apply
  • An ability to provide strategic thinking, leadership and delivery in a fast-paced, scientifically driven environment
  • An ability to craft appropriate scientific strategy and planning to solve complex interrelated business problems
  • Experience working on end-to-end AI projects, from ideation, prototype, to production solutions and have notable experience working as part of large development teams
  • A sound understanding of various statistical and machine learning methods and standard statistical/ML delivery practices in the industry
  • High proficiency and proven track record of researching, designing, coding and delivering high impact data-led insights through novel statistical and machine learning methods
  • High proficiency in scientific computing, scripting of data (e.g. R, Python) and experience working with database systems (e.g. SQL, NoSQL, graph)
  • High proficiency in exploratory data analysis, data profiling and drawing insights from large scale, structured and unstructured datasets and ML/data science solutions
  • Experience with time series, hierarchical, real-world evidence data, and numerical optimization preferred
  • Own, support and manage data science solution deliveries that meet the identified business needs and required quality standards and non-functional requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, business analysis, and consultancy skills
  • Customer focus - dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of customers
  • Integrity and trust -- unwavering dedication to "doing the right thing"
  • A passion to apply machine learning and other data science techniques to tackle difficult problems in drug development, clinical trial operations and related biomedical domains of value for AstraZeneca
  • A strong publication record, patents, contribution to open source projects desired

Desirable:
  • Experience in leading and delivering projects, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders with minimal supervision
  • A track record of consistent and competent scientific delivery in solving challenging business problems using modern data science and machine learning methods
  • Experience managing individuals, small teams and objectives in a matrix organization
  • Experience in novel methods design, development and application
  • Understanding of life sciences, with a preference for clinical drug development, operations and the pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience with deploying statistical/ML models in production systems, and working closely with engineers for integration, management and maintenance of such systems
  • Experience building visualizations and prototypes using RShiny, Dash, PowerBI or Spotfire preferred
  • Experience in data-led solution delivery and software lifecycle development practices including Agile/Scrum, Waterfall, DevOps and/or CI/CD.
  • Experience in AWS and building serverless process, applications, API's desired
