Associate Director, Global Project Management, Early Oncology
Location: Gaithersburg, MD or Waltham, MA

The Associate Director, Global Project Management role is a unique chance to lead cross-functional drug discovery and development teams within the Tumor Targeted Therapy (TTD) unit. As such, you will be a core member of the Early Oncology Global Project Team, accountable for providing project management expertise to manage delivery of drug projects from the Lead Optimization phase through to the completion of proof-of-concept studies, up to Phase 3 Investment Decision. You will work with cross-functional project teams to align operational delivery with the project strategy, and ensure each project is managed according to the standard processes within AstraZeneca.
Accountabilities:
As an Associate Director, you will ensure the delivery of Discovery stage projects within the TTD unit within agreed time, budget, and quality. You will be responsible for driving an effective team environment and facilitating project teams towards successful issue resolution and decision making. You will also provide input into the project strategy & vision and facilitate team towards effective governance decisions.
Responsibilities
Cross-functional Team Leadership and Delivery
- Serve as a core team member and drive efficient operation of Discovery phase project teams including overall plans, priorities, budget and risk management.
- As determined by the TTD LT, support of mechanistically complex &/or accelerated early Discovery Antibody Drug Conjugate (ADC) projects will be prioritized.
- Accountable for driving an effective, efficient team environment and help the Discovery Team Leads build a cohesive, impactful team.
- Facilitate project teams towards successful issue resolution and decision making in majority of situations and focus the team on the right activities at the right time.
Project Strategic Alignment
- Provide input into the project strategy & vision through expertise in project management, execution and governance.
- Ensure alignment of the project and operational deliverables to the team's strategy.
- May lead development of the elements of the team's or development plan or strategy.
- Ensure appropriate linkages between project strategy and key internal processes (TA strategy, TA prioritization, corporate scorecard)
Governance and Investment Decisions
- Facilitate team towards effective governance decisions.
- Integrate and provide information to both the team and senior management.
Planning, Monitoring and Delivery
- Ensure that overall team deliverables, budgets, schedules, and performance standards are realistically set, governance approved and attained, and that the project effectively fulfills all business reporting requirements.
- Maintain plans of the highest data quality, accountable for all Project Management results.
- With Drug Project Coordinator, support updates the TTD pre-LOID discovery portfolio targets in PLANIT.
- Track the whole TTD discovery portfolio in PLANIT (including platform projects) and maintain and update templated project timelines, resources and probability of success.

Essential Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific or technical drug development subject
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in project management within the Pharmaceutical or Biotech industry
- Proven track record of delivering projects within agreed time, quality, and cost
- Ability to manage impactful teams and establish effective team operations
- Ability to work collaboratively in a matrix environment through open, transparent, proactive communication often with senior leaders
- Expertise with project management tools and processes
- Strong information management skills including use of current IM tools such as SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and OneNote
Desired Skills/Experience:
- Graduate or other advanced degree in a scientific subject area (MBA, MS, PhD, etc.)
- Knowledge of the Oncology Therapy Area
- In-depth knowledge of drug development process
- Project Management (PMP) Certification
- Alliance or Collaboration experience
