About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Chief Operating Officer will support dynamic criminal legal reform efforts nationwide. The Deason Criminal Justice Reform Center leads the nation in research and advocacy about the Sixth Amendment right to counsel, the operation of rural criminal courts, and the use of prosecutorial charging discretion.

The COO will support the Center and its Director by managing the Center's administrative functions, including staffing and HR needs, office management, budgeting, reporting, coordinating events, maintaining web content, etc. The COO will also serve as the on-the-ground coordinator of the Center's work portfolio and will thereby help to guarantee successful completion of the Center's research and advocacy projects. The COO will partner with Center staff to ensure efficient and quality results in all aspects of the Center's work.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee daily operations of the Center, identifying efficiencies and areas for improvement. Work with research and policy leads to coordinate project timelines and manage the distribution of Center workloads.
  • Coordinate HR functions for the Center, including staff hiring tasks, and the development and execution of onboarding and exiting procedures and policies. Assist with performance reviews, review staff workloads and assignments, resolving issues between staff or with staff performance, approving overtime and vacations, and responding to concerns raised by staff.
  • Maintain accurate monthly budget reports for the Center's operating and grant funds, including accurate and complete budget tracking for the Center's sub-class categories.
  • Develop, oversee, and maintain policies and procedures for effectively, accurately, and securely managing the Center's personnel, operational assets, and work-in-progress (including strategies and procedures for document file naming, file storage, and file retention).
  • Work with the Communications Director to maintain accurate and up-to-date web content by collecting, posting, and updating Center work product, Center events, and other Center content.
  • Assist in the substantive development and logistical success of the Center's online engagement and education agenda.
  • Serve as the Center's primary liaison with SMU administrative and financial operations, including Human Resources, Purchasing, and Contracts, and handle all administrative work associated with hiring student workers.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Master's degree is required. Juris doctor is preferred.

A minimum of seven (7) years of experience is required.

Candidate with experience managing other professionals, experience in an operations or administration role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate to be proficient with Microsoft suite, virtual meeting platforms, and social media; experience with Asana or another project management software is preferred. Experience with CRM is a plus.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
