The Office of Property & Liability Risk Management's mission is to protect the University and its community against loss by providing risk management services through a program of risk financing, claims management, loss prevention, contract review, and risk advice. The Claims Adjuster plays a major role in fulfilling this mission by providing claims handling, loss prevention and risk management advice to the University community.

This position manages claims matters with representatives of the state's Division of Risk Management and attorneys with the Attorney General's Office and the University's General Counsel's Office. Additionally, this person works directly with members of the public and outside organizations that file claims against the University. The Adjuster is also responsible for subrogating claims against outside organizations and individuals to recover for losses suffered by the University.

This position coordinates the activities of the state mandated Accident Review Committee, in an effort to reduce and prevent losses from auto accidents.

The adjuster has authority to handle all property, auto physical damage and equipment/machinery breakdown claims on behalf of the University, and has full settlement authority up to the University's self-insurance retention of $100,000 per loss. The adjuster will consult with management, upper management and General Counsel on sensitive claim matters as relevant. This position also coordinates general liability and automobile liability claims on behalf of the University with the state Division of Risk Management and the Attorney General's Office. Coordinates with University Police on crime and employee dishonesty claim matters and works with University insurers and IT Security Office on cyber breech incidents.

In a timely manner investigates and adjusts property claims within the University's self-insured retention and ensures proper documentation of claims. Has settlement authority up to $100,000 per claim.

As appropriate for the situation, investigates and coordinates losses in a timely manner with DRM or the appropriate insurer and with attorneys in General Counsel's Office and/or the Attorney General's Office.

Provides requested assistance or advice to the University community concerning claims or risk matters.

Performs other duties, responsibilities and special projects as may be assigned.

Delegates and oversees the claims management administrative assistant responsibilities for timely and accurate completion.

Responsible for the input of accurate claims information into the claim database on a timely basis. Assigns initial and follow up financial loss reserve amounts to each property claim.

Coordinates and manages the programming for the claims database system through interaction with the vendor as well as independently.

Experience handling property and liability claims in a risk management environment and/or working for an insurance company.

This position requires:
- The ability to interpret insurance coverage (insurance policies and self-insurance plans) and determine whether a loss is insured, and to be able to work with the appropriate insurance company to successfully recover a loss.
- For those losses that are self-insured, it requires an ability to adjust property claims for final settlement.
- Ability to analyze a loss situation and determine how best to handle the claim
- Requires the ability to communicate professionally orally and in writing.
- The ability to coordinate priorities well and manage multiple responsibilities on a timely basis.

  • The ability to interpret insurance coverage limits from Certificates of Insurance and determine if appropriate for situation.
  • Ability to independently problem solve and provide confident recommendations.
  • Ability to work efficiently and amicably in a team environment.
  • Ability to quickly analyze a situation and adapt response to best handle issues.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and adapt in order to assist people in varying disciplines, differing organizational levels and multiple functions.

This position requires proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Experience handling property and liability claims in a risk management environment and/or working for an insurance company is preferred.

Extensive knowledge of commercial property and liability insurance coverages and claim handling expertise acquired from a commercial insurance company or professional risk management operation is preferred.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
