Computer Science: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Computer Science - 000414 & 000793

The University of Richmond Department of Computer Science invites applications for two full-time faculty positions to begin in the 2023-24 academic year. One position is at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, the other is open to rank, across the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor levels. Full professors may also be eligible for an appointment to an endowed professorship.

We are seeking colleagues who will enhance the undergraduate teaching as well as scholarly and creative opportunities provided by our computer science program. The area of specialty is open, but we especially welcome applicants with background and/or teaching experience in systems areas, including operating systems, computer organization, simulation, distributed/cloud computing, networks, robotics, cybersecurity, and software engineering. A Ph.D. in computer science is required and must be completed by the start date. Strong applicants at the associate and full professor level will also be considered.

Applicants should have the potential and desire to commit to highly effective, inclusive teaching at all levels of the undergraduate computer science curriculum and to maintain a vigorous research program that has the potential to engage undergraduates in meaningful research outcomes. We are firmly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, striving to give all students interested in computer science the opportunity, skills, and support needed to succeed. We are seeking colleagues who share these goals of broadening access and inclusivity in STEM disciplines in general, and in computer science specifically, which aligns with the University's strategic plan ( https://strategicplan.richmond.edu ) as well as that of the School of Arts and Sciences ( https://as.richmond.edu/initiatives-resources/concept30/about/index.html ).

The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With nearly 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and more than 90% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is remarkably student-centered, focused on preparing students "to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society."

The University of Richmond is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body and to modeling an inclusive campus community that values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development, and institutional success. Our academic community strongly encourages applications that are in keeping with this commitment. For more information on the department and its programs, please see https://cs.richmond.edu .

Applicants should apply online at http://jobs.richmond.edu submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, and three statements:

  1. A statement on teaching discussing the applicant's philosophy, as well as experience and training as applicable. Please indicate any existing and/or new course preferences.
  2. A statement on research discussing the applicant's research program and agenda. Please explain how undergraduates may be involved in the research.
  1. A statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in STEM (commensurate with career stage), commenting on your awareness of issues relevant to DEI in STEM, any engagement with diverse communities in science or activities supporting DEI in academic contexts, and how those experience will impact your research and teaching activities.

The successful applicant's cover letter and statements will discuss how their teaching and scholarly interests will contribute in the context of an undergraduate liberal arts education, and should highlight the applicant's vision for integration of teaching and research. In addition, please include copies of academic transcripts and the names of three references who will receive an email asking them to submit their reference letters to the University's Human Resources department at urhr@richmond.edu . Candidates may be asked at a later date for additional information about teaching, research, and service. Review of applications will commence October 14, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the search should be directed to Dr. Douglas Szajda ( dszajda@richmond.edu ), chair of the Computer Science Department.
