ABOUT THIS ROLE

CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY:

Provides direct delivery of mental health counseling and services, including individual and group counseling of students. Assists with marketing, development and presentation of programs on mental health issues pertinent to the student population.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Extensive experience with college population and emergency interventions related to suicide, sexual assault and violence against women. Must be versed in Title IX laws and regulations. Must be an active listener, excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills and effective in persuasion and interviewing techniques.

JOB CLASSIFICATION:

  • Hourly/Part-time, non-benefits eligible. Mon- Fri less than 20 hours/week based on clinic needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Direct delivery of mental health counseling, including individual and group therapy, and crisis intervention for students experiencing mental, psychological, or behavioral problems.
  • Prepare treatment plans; maintain progress notes, interview records, and case files, assuring all legal and ethical requirements are followed.
  • Effectively refer clients to on campus and community resources for provisional and additional mental health care.
  • Participate in department development and maintenance of standards of practice as outlined in the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC)
  • Promotion of SHC Counseling services to students, faculty and staff.
  • Assists with outreach programs on mental health issues pertinent to the university student population.
  • Acts as consultant to faculty and staff seeking assistance with case management or referral.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative referral relationships with appropriate mental health
    professionals, organizations, and support groups, both on and off campus.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by Director of Student Health Center, Asst. Director Counseling Svs. or Vice President for Student Engagement.
  • Additional duties may include one or more of the following: Counseling representative on Quality Improvement Board and Member representative of Faculty and/or Staff Senate

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's or doctoral degree in clinical psychology, counseling psychology or mental health therapy from an accredited university
  • Completion of all required post-graduate intern hours
  • Full licensure for clinical practice in mental health counseling in the state of Texas

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Excellent ability to make professional evaluations, decisions, and recommendations for treatment planning and implementation.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time constraints and maintain a pleasant, welcoming demeanor.
  • Ability to assess and respond to mental health emergencies then facilitate treatment to preserve life and safety.
  • Excellent communication skills and dynamic personality to effectively connect with people.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism with clients who are in distress, argumentative or possibly physically abusive.

    KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of DSM diagnosis and coding related to Mental Health
  • Knowledge of HIPPA/FERPA , etc. related to Mental Health services
  • Knowledge of Title IX, Clery Act, and VAWA regulations

    EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of one to five years full time experience in a position providing a broad array of individual counseling and group therapy experiences.
  • Experience or training dealing with various forms of substance abuse.
  • One to three years dealing directly with adolescent and young adult populations
  • Emergent or crisis intervention and treatment.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL:
  • Must be able to perform occasional lifting / carrying of 10-15 pounds; sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees and supervisors, using a teamwork approach, and taking direction from Director and Assistant Director.
  • Ability to come to work in a timely and predictable manner.
  • Ability to tolerate criticism.
  • Ability to tolerate stressful situations.
