Job Summary

The Leadership Development Office (LDO), with suites in the Harper Center and the Gleacher Center, oversees a portfolio of developmental programs at the Booth School of Business. This includes an experiential class (LEAD) required of all MBA students, versions of which are also offered to Law and College students at the University. Other program offerings for the LDO include classroom based instruction, managing student leadership roles, and coaching. Each member of the LDO team plays a lead role in designing and managing particular offerings. Additionally, each team member supports our full complement of programs through activities such as individual and team coaching, facilitating workshops, and classroom instruction. Finally, each team member owns a set of administrative responsibilities necessary to the success of the Office. All team members are part of a group that collectively manages all office activities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the design and implementation of all co-curricular programming. The most significant aspect of this responsibility involves running the Advanced Leadership Seminar for Full-Time, Evening, and Weekend MBA students. The Seminar is a year-long developmental program that provides interested students a range of development opportunities. Interprets the core curricular goals of the LDO, creates engaging and impactful learning experiences, leads a team of coaches in developing and delivering these experiences, manages the student experience, and evaluates program impact. This includes managing the associated budget and oversight of operations staff whose work supports the Seminar.
  • Manages LDO team members. Supervises four Leadership Development Coaches including hiring, developing, and managing. The aim is to build and guide a team that is productive, creative, flexible, and committed. Also manages the work of team members they do not formally supervise. The office employs a matrixed structure which requires collaborating with team members cross different team silos. In this context, the Director manages projects and the work products of other LDO team members.
  • Manages institutional relationships. The LDO resides within a large and complex organization, the Booth School of Business. Creates and sustains successful partnerships with departments allied with our learning goals. Additionally, the Director must apprehend the impact of school policies and practices and influence the direction of both with a mind toward more fully achieving favorable outcomes for the school, our office and partners, and our students.
  • Plays a lead role in the management of the LDO. One of a team of four who collectively manage all the efforts of the LDO. In this capacity, the Director collaborates with the Associate Dean and other LDO team leads to provide perspective and ideas. Successful directors bring a point of view concerning office practice and curricular goals and at the same time are responsive to the perspectives of their peers. As a team lead, the Director plays a lead role in exploring and resolving emergent needs.
  • Performs a mix of instruction, facilitation, and coaching as a member of the coaching team. This requires the ability to organize and guide the participation of fellow coaches when the Director is managing a project. It also requires the ability to take direction and guidance from other coaching team members when the Director plays a supporting role in other coaches' projects.
  • As a senior staff member of the Booth School of Business, expected to contribute to the overall quality of the student educational experience. This is a broad responsibility that involves understanding the larger organizational context, understanding the student experience, apprehending when there is need for change or opportunities for improvement, and the ability to flexibly work with partners to take action.
  • Designs, delivers, and evaluates course content including workshops, retreats, and other events. Recruits, plans, and implements training exercises and workshops that support the learning of facilitators and/or participants.
  • Manages relationships with other MBA program and facilities staff to assure continuity in programs and priorities and logistical challenges.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:
  • Master's degree.

Experience:
  • A minimum seven years of experience coaching/developing others, such as executive or management development, developmental education, counseling, coaching, or a related field.
  • Helping individuals transfer the value of school-based learning to life and work.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team and driving result through the work of others.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Coach credentialing (e.g., BCC, ICF).

Preferred Competencies
  • Work independently with little supervision; possess a self-motivated disposition; identify opportunities for improvement and recommend effective changes, all while achieving key objectives resulting in desired outcomes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the logistical aspects of training, event, and meeting planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and diplomatically with colleagues, as well as with students, faculty and corporate contacts in a multitude of communication methods i.e., in person, email, phone.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and presentation skills, as well as organizational skills.
  • Professional demeanor, including tact, discretion, and a customer service-oriented approach.
