JOB SUMMARY

Manages the operational and strategic direction of the company's environmental programs and compliance. Ensures compliance with federal, state and local regulations as well as the company's policies and procedures related to environmental permitting and compliance by proactively working with region environmental staff, operations management and corporate environmental staff.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF FOCUS

  • Collaborates with key business leaders and program staff to execute audits and assessments in the environmental, sustainability, and other operational risk management program areas
  • Develops and implements strategies, methodologies, and processes to execute compliance audits and assessments in the program areas of environmental, sustainability, and other operational risk management areas including pipeline compliance
  • Manages the tactical execution of the audits and assessments and may participate in select audits and assessments as an Audit Team Leader or Audit Team Member. Completes the respective reports, follow ups on the corrective actions of the findings, advises leadership team of audit and assessments results and trends, and publishes annual report of audit programs progress and findings

WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
  • Provides leadership and technical direction to operations management and environmentalstaffs on environmental compliance and permitting
  • Seeks opportunities to improve the company's environmental permitting and compliance processes
  • Maintains advanced knowledge of applicable regulations including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Endangered Species Act and various state level regulations specifically in regard to the associated impacts on operations in addition to interpreting and applying state and federal laws as well as the company's policy and procedures
  • Identifies environmental risks which require priority attention and works with Operations and supporting staffs to develop and implement corrective actions
  • Participates on the Environmental Managers Team to develop policies and procedures to ensure awareness and compliance with environmental requirements and to develop implementation strategies for policies, procedures, permits and environmental requirements
  • Collaborates with cross functional teams to lead implementation of programs and processes to ensure compliance
  • Develops tactical approaches for managing specific compliance projects
  • Coordinates responses, reports, and negotiations with federal, state, and local environmental agencies
  • Promotes strong communications to enhance and encourage environmental compliance
  • Provides input related to environmental expenditures for functional or geographic area and controls assigned budget
  • Develops and oversees environmental training and provides direction to employees according to established policies and management guidance
  • Fulfills people leader responsibilities including hiring, staffing and firing decisions, employee training and development, performance evaluation and issue remediation, and budget planning and control as well as creating a culture of respect where diversity and inclusiveness are valued
  • Performs other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or a similar degree field and/or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 10 years related experience is required
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable federal and state air and water quality regulations is required
  • Advanced mathematical, science, and analytical abilities with the capacity to identify trends
  • Strong communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to influence at a local level and across a broad organization
  • Advanced mathematical, science and analytical abilities as well as technical writing skills
  • Advanced computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Experience with Environmental Management Systems

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
  • A minimum of 3 years of related auditing experience required
  • Advanced knowledge of Environmental regulations, management systems, and programs is required
  • Experience managing environmental audits and assessments including scheduling, communication, audit team selection, and coordination with operations, program staff, and legal

SPECIAL DEMANDS
  • This job primarily operates in a professional office environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, etc. Noise level is typically low. Frequently in a stationary, sitting position for prolonged periods of time. Regularly moves about inside the office to complete tasks, attend meetings or to access the copy machine or file cabinets. Periodically pulls/pushes doors open to move around the office. Occasionally may lift and carry objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional travel will be required
