The Duke Heart Center Electrophysiology (EP) Device Nurse/VT Coordinator is responsible and accountable for patient and staff education around implantable devices and procedures, device interrogation and documentation. Ensuring appropriate follow-up for patients with implanted rhythm management cardiac devices (pacemakers, defibrillators, implantable loop recorders) and post ablation procedures for ventricular arrhythmias.. The incumbent functions are as clinical nurse, educator, investigator, and consultant. Clinical judgments are based on a synthesis of data from current and emerging research, concepts, principles, theories, and outcomes to solve complex problems. The Cardiology EP Device Nurse/VT Coordinator provides direct patient care services and education to patients in the post procedural, and monitoring phase of rhythm management and cardiac device implantation and follow-up primarily at Duke University Hospital. The Cardiology EP Device Nurse/VT Coordinator will work primarily with cardiology patients who are being evaluated for cardiac rhythm management, devices in post implant care including setting up appropriate follow-up at Duke University Hospital (DUH) as well as patients undergoing specific EP rhythm management procedures. The Cardiology EP Device Nurse performs post procedural screenings, educates patients and their families on device-specific care and ongoing monitoring requirements and procedures, and coordinates and performs implantable device interrogation, programming, and documentation in the electronic medical record under the supervision of the Electrophysiology Cardiologist rounding on the inpatient service. The Cardiology EP Device Nurse/VT Coordinator partners with the inpatient and outpatient clinical care teams to coordinate and expedite transitions of care including admissions and discharges for patients with implanted devices/VT ablations and may provide direct patient care services, such as wound assessment and dressing changes as well as follow-up of patients post arrhythmia treatment procedures, such as ablations. Position Requirements
Education:
Work requires graduation from an accredited nursing program with a minimal requirement of a BSN and at least one year of experience
Licensure:
RN: Current licensure or eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
Experience:
Strongly prefer candidate with at least three years of experience as an RN in an inpatient cardiology setting, including care of patient with implantable rhythm management cardiac devices and competency in basic rhythm interpretation. Expertise and clinical competency in implantable cardiac device interrogation and programming required.
Certifications:
Must have American Heart Association BLS certification
International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) device certification preferred
Hours
Primary hours will be Monday thru Friday dayshift. Schedule may be changed by administrative or clinical leadership to meet departmental needs.

Reports directly to the Reports directly to Nurse manager EP lab with clinical responsibility to the inpatient rounding Cardiac Electrophysiologist. In addition, s/he will be accountable to the Division of Cardiology and the Duke Heart Center for clinical outcomes, defined quality indicators and to the standards set forth by the Duke Heart Center, the Division of Cardiology, and the Chief of the Section of Cardiac Electrophysiology.
Process of Evaluation
Annual and midyear evaluations will be conducted by the Nurse Manager or their delegate with input from the Chief of the Section of Cardiac Electrophysiology and multidisciplinary team members who work with the device/VT nurse.

Clinical ExpertThe Cardiology EP Device Nurse is responsible for providing/coordinating direct clinical care to cardiology patients on the Cardiac Electrophysiology service and other inpatient services, Emergency Department, or those requiring inpatient and hospital based outpatient procedures performed at Duke Hospital pre and post implant of a cardiac device. The work environment involves risk discomforts that are typical of an acute care setting to include working with patients under isolation and universal precautions. It requires safety precautions, ongoing education, and health risk monitoring. Contact with specimens, chemicals, sharps, radiation, technical equipment and fumes are possible. Employees are required to wear personal protective attire according to hospital policies and OSHA guidelines. The work activity and patient acuity levels can create a stressful atmosphere.
