Job Summary

Performs a variety of semi-skilled activities related to construction, maintenance of stage props, scenery and ancillary theatrical support equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support in the areas of lighting, sound, rigging, painting, scenery, scenic construction, maintenance of scene shop, equipment and tools. Ensure the proper and safe operation of all equipment, provide maintenance of all tools and light equipment, as needed.
  • Assist in routine maintenance of stages and shops including sweeping and mopping, organizing tool, hardware, and paint storage, organizing and cleaning storage area.
  • Provide work direction and work oversight to student employees. Assist in overseeing and instruction of lab students in proper and safe techniques of stagecraft in the areas of lighting, scenery, properties, rigging, safety procedures and proper usage of all tools and equipment. Assure quality control by checking work done by lab students against specifications from the construction plans. .
This position may perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position to include participating in committee assignments and the recruitment and retention of students.

This position will be open until filled.Qualifications

Education: High School diploma/GED and the ability to read, write and do basic arithmetic
Experience: Two (2) years related experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of stage carpentry, lighting, sound and rigging.
  • Knowledge of theatrical equipment, painting and/or crafts.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of assorted power tools including but not limited to saw, plainer, nail gun, high impact staplers, and pneumatic tools.
  • Ability to build from working drawings supplied by the Technical Manager/Designer.
  • Ability to maintain inventory of scenic materials and hardware and maintain shop log book.
  • Ability to work or without direct supervision, be able to handle multiple tasks, demonstrate a continual desire to improve and gain knowledge of the field, and be able to adapt to changing work situations.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Perform a variety of physical duties including lifting up to 50 lbs with assistance. Position requires the ability to ascend, descend and work on a ladder or scaffolding employing safe work procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Job is performed with moderate to considerable exposure to various disagreeable elements. Work may involve exposure to dust and/or unpleasant conditions, frequent handling of disagreeable materials such as chemicals, lubricants, and cleaners. May also include continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure to poor weather conditions, or occasional work in confined areas. May be required to work weekends, nights, and/or holidays as needed.
