Summary Statement

The Planning and Development Services Department is currently searching for a few dynamic individuals to join the Plans Review/Permit Team . We are seeking detail-oriented applicants who possess impeccable follow-up skills and have the ability to understand site plans and property descriptions. The team currently has:

  • 2 Full-time Plans Review/Permit Technician positions
    • Pays $17-$18.25/hr
  • 1 Full-time Lead Plans Review/Permit Technician position
    • Pays $19.40-$21.40/hr
Plans Review/Permit Technician role will:
  • Perform a wide variety of administrative and technical functions such as initial commercial and residential technical review to enforce minimum submittal requirements for permit applications
  • Answering phones, scheduling inspections, and greeting walk-in customers
  • Assist customers through the application process for building, grading and trade permit creation and issuance.
  • Review documentation at application intake with the customer to verify completeness and accuracy of submittals
  • Create project cases in the permit tracking database and initiate/coordinate plan review routing for building and grading permits
  • Verify and review technical construction plans and related documents and reports for compliance with code requirements
  • Explain and apply specific city codes, ordinances, policies, and procedures to efficiently work with a diverse customer base
  • Work under general supervision
  • Has potential for a hybrid work schedule
Lead Plans Review/Permit Technician role will:
  • Provide backup support of the Plans Review/Permit Technician duties listed above
  • Support team of plan review/permit technicians through education and training
  • Provide customer support on complex and/or high-profile projects

Requirements

Universal Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Applicants must be able to pass:
    • City of Boise background check processes including a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, and Training
  • Associate's degree in business accounting, public administration, or related field
  • College course work in construction technology, blueprint reading
  • Content management software, an application program that manages land development and permitting applications
Plans Review/Permit Technician
Required Experience and Training
  • One year of experience performing administrative or clerical support duties in a departmental or operational group
Licensing and Other Requirements
  • International Code Council (ICC) Permit Technician Certification or the ability to obtain this certification within 6-8 months of hire
Lead Plan Review/Permit Technician
Required Experience and Training
  • 5 years of office experience and familiarity with construction processes
  • Valid state-issued driver's license
Licensing And Other Requirements
  • International Code Council (ICC) certified Permit Technician
Special Requirements
  • Driving Record Check

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds, and rarely lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds. The noise level is frequently moderate. Work includes the sensory ability to talk and hear. Work in this position also includes close vision and distance vision. Employees will sit, stand, walk, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
