Role Description

The Principal Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Engineering Manager (Pr. ME, ME Mgr) will work as a member of the research and development team in the design, development, testing, and integration of electro-mechanical, thermal, and optical sub-systems into new, innovative diagnostic products. The Pr. ME, ME Mgr will apply best practice development strategy and advanced technical concepts to solve complex problems, distilling them down to effective product offerings which strike the balance of functionality and usability. The Pr. ME, ME Mgr will be guided by a thorough stage gate development process and be expected to resolve complex technical challenges that arise during product development. The Pr. ME, ME Mgr will work with a global team within the Veterinary Medicine Research and Development (VMRD) organization, in close collaboration with cross functional teams, including Design Engineers, CAD Designers, Product Engineers, Quality Representatives, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Suppliers, under the direction of VMRD leadership. The person in this position will lead a global team of engineers and developers through the entire project development cycle and act as the primary point of contact on all mechanical engineering topics in the Global Diagnostics organization.

A Pr. ME, ME Mgr oversees the team for primary design responsibility from concept to the completion of the Beta phase. The Pr. ME, ME Mgr will lead the Design Engineering, Product Engineering, and CAD teams ensuring product performance is met while scaling the product for launch. This will ensure that the design meets internal customer performance targets, the designs are successfully transferred to the operations team, and will provide product support (issue resolution) after launch.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the conceptual design & development process through completion of the beta phase milestone of the stage gate process. Participates in ensuring that designs can be implemented into a producible/viable product, starting at the final development phase.
  • Grow and maintain technical knowledge with advancing technology related to technology and product development of in-vitro diagnostic devices.
  • Design components, including electro-mechanical solutions. Work with Global Manufacturing Services to consider high volume assembly process in design concepts (Design for Manufacturability)
  • Design and development of electro-mechanical and thermodynamic control sequences as required by product requirements, while understanding the interface to electrical control systems and underlying biological process needs.
  • Prepare documentation for stage gate development activities and efforts.
  • Develop and implement mechanical, electrical, and system concept design, perform sensitivity analysis, timing analysis, or other design analyses.
  • Assessment of design risks, and proposing, evaluating, and implementing mitigations.
  • Ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.
  • Proficient in communicating complex technical situations in an understandable way.
  • Work cross functionally in a global organization, deploy engineering best practices in the context of a stage-gate development process, and navigate satisfying product technical specifications as prescribed by customer and market requirements.
  • Participate in engineering for complex electromechanical/thermodynamic/optical systems to define product specifications and controls interactions of each system.
  • Coordinate problem solving of design issues.
  • Extensive interaction with suppliers in design, analysis, and other technical liaison requirements.
  • As required, produce detailed drawings, BOMs and release documents for the above design activities.
  • Carry the leadership role of the product engineering effort in the co-development process with GMT, GMS, and Quality such that product commercialization is achieved through product launch and supply base development.
  • Responsible for proper engineering transfer of VMRD product design release and collaborative change management process into the GMS and SAP systems.
  • Responsible for the system level conceptual design & development process through completion of the product launch milestone of the stage gate process. Also participates in ensuring that designs can be implemented into a viable product, in a support role, starting at the initial development phase.
  • Work with Global Manufacturing Services to consider high volume assembly process in design concepts (Design for Manufacturability). Analyze and recommend improvements of production processes and methods to facilitate cost reduction and quality improvement.
  • Participate in the oversight of Contract Product Development (external partner/OEM's)
  • Design and development of all electro-mechanical and thermodynamic control sequences required by product requirements, while understanding the interface to electrical control systems and underlying biological process needs.
  • Prepare documentation for stage gate development activities and efforts.
  • Develop and implement mechanical, electrical, and system concept design, perform sensitivity analysis, timing analysis, or other design analysis.
  • Assessment of system level risks, and proposing, evaluating, and implementing mitigations.
  • Ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.
  • Participate in system engineering for complex electromechanical/thermodynamic/optical systems to define product specifications and controls interactions of each system.
  • Analyze and recommend corrective actions in case of any design issues.
  • Extensive interaction with suppliers in design, analysis, and other technical liaison requirements.
  • As required, produce detailed drawings, BOMs and release documents for the above design activities.
  • Seek opportunities to build new product offerings across the portfolio, consistent with the Zoetis strategy to drive a continuum of care (predict, prevent, detect, and treat) in addressing unmet customer needs.

Education & Experience
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, MSME or PE preferred. Minimum of 15 years demonstrated engineering experience in a complex engineered product environment. Quality Management System understanding a must.
  • 10 years of experience in developing animal health devices/systems/products or adjacent industry
  • 10 years of experience working with Design and Implementation teams, Operations (Manufacturing, Quality, Metrology) and suppliers from an engineering, technical perspective.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience leading, managing, developing product development team members

Technical Skill Requirements
  • SAP understanding, Engineering Change Management in PLM environment
  • Root cause analysis techniques and documentation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in engineering specifications and design for automated equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials and manufacturing/construction principles.
  • Demonstrated experience with Solid Works, CAD, drawing storage/control, SAP, PDM and other.
  • Demonstrated experience in critical thinking and problem-solving skills, planning and organizing, decision-making
  • Demonstrated experience in development of electromechanical product assemblies, including PCBAs, is desirable
  • Excellent communication skills, influencing and leading, facilitation and teamwork capabilities
  • Experience with creating and managing Jira tasks and dashboards desirable.
