Position Summary

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral research associate position in the Department of Entomology at Michigan State University and in direct association with INRAE-CNRS-IRD research unit MIVEGEC, Montpellier University, in Montpellier, France. Research responsibilities of the postdoctoral research associate will be associated with research focusing on disease modeling of Mycobacterium spp. within and among invertebrate and vertebrate communities, including human as reservoirs and hosts, of disturbed and pristine freshwater ecosystems of French Guiana, South America. The research associate will be expected to train and work in France for extended periods of time, collaborating with co-PIs and other researchers at INRAE-CNRS-IRD research unit MIVEGEC, Montpellier University, in Montpellier.

The project aims to study the effects of ecosystem modifications (e.g., deforestation), land-use change (e.g., mining, agriculture) on the eco-epidemiological conditions that determine the presence, persistence, genetic diversity and spread of Mycobacterium ulcerans and non-tuberculous mycobacteria in French Guiana and the Guiana Shield, M. ulcerans causes serious emerging disease in animals and humans. The postdoctoral research associate will therefore have preferred qualifications to accomplish the following: 1) model the presence, persistence and spread of mycobacteria strains and species with complex life cycles considering the effects of land use change and biodiversity alteration on local host communities and species networks; 2) decipher the role of the drivers of disease emergence and spread operating at different time and spatial scales; and 3) formalize these findings in a disease ecology and evolution framework to describe and analyze these multihost/multi-mycobacteria systems and their spatio-temporal dynamics.

The start date for this position is expected 1 August 2022. The initial appointment is for one year, with potential for renewal for another year based on satisfactory performance.

The postdoctoral research associate position is opened at Michigan State University within an international research consortium funded by a NSF Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Disease (EEID) award, with research performed at Montpellier in southern France. The candidate will be expected to complete long-term training at Montpellier, France and MSU at East Lansing, and he/she will participate and promote collaboration between the two research centers. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) at Michigan State University is committed to achieving excellence by creating and sustaining an accessible and inclusive culture that values cultural and academic diversity. We are an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. The CANR is particularly interested in candidates of all backgrounds who are committed to the principle that academic excellence is achieved through open access and proactive inclusion.

Minimum Requirements
  • The candidates must have a Ph.D. in disease ecology, evolutionary biology, biomathematics/biostatistics applied to disease transmission or a related field, with evidence of research productivity beyond their graduate research. At least one year of postdoctoral experience after the PhD thesis, notably within the field of mathematical modeling of disease transmission, will be an advantage.
  • The candidate must be fluent in English with willingness to work and interact in a French speaking work environment. The candidate must have demonstrated effective written and oral science communication since the required work will necessitate collaboration with several US and French institutions and universities. In addition, the research associate will be required to fluently communicate in English scientific results to both technical and lay audiences in written and presentation formats.
  • Experience and expertise in both statistical and mathematical modeling of disease agent transmission at the interface between natural environment, wildlife and human communities is required. Demonstrated experience in statistical models (e.g., GLMM, SEM) and epidemiological SIR modeling, network-disease transmission models, metapopulation and metacommunity models, spatially-explicit models and evolutionary optimal modeling are required for this position.
  • Demonstrated success in developing epidemiological models for multihost-disease agent transmission at the interface between the environment, wildlife, domestic animals and human populations.
  • Willingness and experience in participating to field research in remote and difficult tropical rainforest conditions within a team context.
  • Demonstrated success working as part of a team within multinational, multidisciplinary, and multilingual scientific contexts.
  • Desired Qualifications
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with large datasets and different hierarchical levels of spatial and temporal frames.
  • Interest and experience with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Interest in merging together theoretical and empirical studies, i.e., hypothetico-deductive, hypothesis testing, formalism with data analysis.
  • Interest in wildlife watching and breakthrough research.
  • Required Application Materials

Candidates should submit a cover letter describing research experience and career goals and how they fit this position, a curriculum vitae, and names and contact information for three references. For more information about:
