Position Summary

A Research Associate (Postdoctoral Researcher) position is available jointly in the Translational NanoImmunoEngineering (T-NIE) lab of Dr. Bryan R. Smith in the Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) and the Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (IQ) and the Physical Ultrasonics, Microscopy and Acoustics (PUMA) lab of Dr. Sunil Kishore Chakrapani in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Michigan State University.

The Smith T-NIE Laboratory is working at the interface of nanoengineering, biology including immunology, and advanced imaging to develop new strategies to therapeutically manipulate and visualize the immune system in living subjects in the context of diseases such as cancer and atherosclerosis. We develop novel nanoimaging and nanotherapy platforms employing a variety of in vivo experimental and computational approaches. The Chakrapani PUMA lab develops ultrasonic and acoustic systems for novel applications of acoustic waves.

The successful candidate will focus on biomedical/nanomedical applications of HIFU, and will be expected to stay current on relevant literature related to the research projects (particularly nanomedicine, HIFU, and disease biology), write manuscripts and funding applications such as fellowships, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the lab.

Job duties include but are not limited to:
* Fabrication and characterization of various acoustically- and magnetically-sensitive nanomaterial agents
* Laboratory work in ultrasonic labs including testing ultrasonic systems, designing and 3D printing fixtures for experiments.
* Performing laboratory work: cell culture, animal handling, flow cytometry, biochemical assays, other immunological assays (e.g., cytokine, differentiation/activation, and T cell response assays), handling biological characterization of nanomaterials, and microscopy, including work with mouse models
* Running simulations on FEM software such as COMSOL, ANSYS, etc.
* In vitro and in vivo imaging of immunological/nano interactions in mouse models
* Data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation.
* Operating and maintaining scientific instruments.
* Maintaining lab notebook and protocols.

Required Degree

Doctorate -biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field

Minimum Requirements

* A PhD or MD/PhD in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
* Experience in nanomedicine and biomaterials or related field is required.
* Focused ultrasound (e.g., HIFU), nanochemistry, and/or imaging expertise is preferred.
* Excellent writing and communication skills are necessary.

Desired Qualifications
  • Nano-chemistry and/or focused ultrasound experience are strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with computational simulations or biomedicine would be a plus.
