The Research Specialist will primarily support research in the Hughes Lab within the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. The Hughes lab studies the integration of tissue patterning strategies from developmental biology into tissue engineered systems to build models of human disease, reconstituted tissues for regenerative medicine, and new types of biological machines. The lab's particular interest is in the early development of epithelial organs such as the kidney, which is crucial for combatting congenital disease. The lab has expertise in single-cell analysis, tissue construction using iPSC-derived cell lineages, soft materials, and micro-scale engineering techniques.
Job Description
The Research Specialist will contribute to kidney organoid and tissue production efforts using iPSC-derived cell lineages. Use and develop several established protocols for generation of nephron and ureteric epithelial cell lineages, and work closely with lab members that apply these lineages in several projects. These projects include studying the mechanics of the nephron niche, studying the effect of cell composition in engineered spheroids on organoid morphogenesis, and using synthetic biology to engineer cell-cell signaling relevant to kidney development.
Follow established and evolving protocols to develop and perform moderately complex laboratory experiments and scientific activities in cell culture, standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, molecular cloning, biochemical assays), and microscopy under the supervision of Dr. Hughes and assisting senior lab members. Record, interpret and analyze results in using prescribed methods and identify options for new studies. Maintain some laboratory equipment and lab supplies. Perform routine lab support, lab management, and purchasing duties, as assigned.
