Job Description Summary
The Rodent Metabolic Phenotyping Core (RMPC) of the Diabetes Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a full time Research Specialist. Our core facility offers state-of-the art technology and phenotyping services to allow investigators to study metabolism in pre-clinical rodent models. Our clients include Penn and other university researchers in addition to corporate customers. Services include measurements of body composition (fat and lean mass) using NMR and DEXA, energy balance (food intake, locomotor activity, energy expenditure) using indirect calorimetry, and other in vivo metabolic phenotyping services (glucose clamps, insulin and glucose tolerance tests, telemetric monitoring). We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly skilled Research Specialist to perform metabolic and physiological characterization of rodents using these assays.

The Research Specialist C will be expected to work independently with support and supervision by the Technical Director, and to train students and technicians.
The Research Specialist D will be expected to be self-directing with guidance from the Technical Director, and to train and supervise other technicians and students.
Position contingent upon funding.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Research Specialist C: Bachelor's Degree with 3-5 years of related experience in research, clinical study, project and people management or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Master's degree plus 3-5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Research Specialist D: Master's degree plus 3-5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Doctoral degree plus 5-7 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to work on several projects concurrently.
Very good written and verbal communication skills are required.
Experience training and supervising others is preferred.
Advanced degree in medicine, nursing, Animal Science, Physiology, Biology or related field (see specifics below).
Experience in rodent (mouse and rat) husbandry, handling, and basic molecular biology techniques is required.
Experience performing surgical procedures in rodents is required, with a strong preference for experience in vascular cannulation or catheterization.
Experience performing in vivo metabolic techniques in rodents is strongly preferred.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
