This Research Specialist's primary role is to use preclinical models concussion and perform molecular, immunohistochemical, and biochemical analysis of tissue damage after concussion. A secondary role is to develop new experimental protocols for assessing brain damage after concussion, and to develop computational models for predicting concussion risk.

Job Description

This Research Specialist in Bioengineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania will assess the extent of neurological damage in an in vivo/in vitro model of central nervous system injury; perform molecular, immunochemical and biochemical analysis of tissue damage; and maintain neural tissue culture. Additional responsibilities include assisting with supply and animal orders, maintaining protocol books, and helping to maintain equipment, supply inventory, and safety compliance in the lab. Develop new experimental protocols, and is responsible for working with collaborating laboratories to learn new methods, performing technically complex experiments, data acquisition and analysis, and maintaining data records. Participates in the writing of funding proposals, abstracts and papers.

This position is contingent on continued funding.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with related experience in research and clinical study methodologies. Good organizational and communication skills and good work ethic, and the ability to work independently with attention to detail. Preferred: Lab experience handling in cell culture, microbiology, molecular biology or physiology; some experience handling animals and experience tabulating and plotting data with Excel. Computer programming experience preferred.
