Department Information

The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 200 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.

With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists the Principal Investigator in conducting research in human papillomavirus and infection-associated cancer development within the Wells Center for Pediatric Research. Research on human papillomavirus includes host-viral interactions, cellular pathway regulation, and cancer pathway activation.
  • Conducts investigative research related to human papillomavirus and its associated cancers that includes multiple molecular biology techniques (DNA, RNA, and protein purification), southern blots, real time PCR, sequencing, protein quantification, western immunoblots, immunoprecipitation assays, RNA-protein immunoprecipitation assays, tissue culture of cell lines and primary cell cultures, retroviral production, transduction and cell culture selection, three-dimensional raft culture production, preparation of samples for histology and immunohistochemical staining, immunofluorescent staining of cells, light microscopy, confocal microscopy, in vitro RNA and protein production, DNA cloning, short hairpin RNA production, CRISPR/Cas9 cloning and transduction for targeted DNA mutation, and statistical analyses of molecular biological data.
  • Makes extensive use of cell and molecular biology techniques, monolayer and three dimensional tissue culture, and archived patient sample studies.
General Responsibilities
  • Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results.
  • Organizes analytical data of performed experiments. May submit findings for publication.
  • Installs and maintains research equipment.
  • Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training.
  • Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management.
  • Trains junior-level staff.
  • Plans experiments and short-term goals.
  • May require travel in order to service various research sites.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in science or related field

  • 2 years of related research experience

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

The salary range for this position is $42,000 - $47,000 yearly. Salary determination is based on experience, skill level, education, and training.
