Application Programmer/Analyst

Scientific Programmer

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences are seeking a Scientific Programmer. This position will support The Kliemann Lab for Social Cognitive Neuroscience at The University of Iowa. This position is a full time one-year specified term with possibility for renewal.

Our research focuses on the neurobiology of social cognition. Our studies employ neuroimaging (fMRI) and behavioral methods, which generate high volume and high dimensional data sets. This position will develop and maintain computing workflows for experimental design, data analyses, and data management (mostly Python and Unix based). The programmer is expected to assist graduate students and other research assistants in scientific programming.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Follow the overall research protocol and develop data analysis scripts that incorporate existing Python scientific computing packages for behavioral, eye-tracking, and MRI research.
  • Assist Principal Investigator (PI) in developing novel tools for neuroimaging data analyses.
  • Assist with implementation of existing tools for neuroimaging data analyses.
  • Utilize PsychoPy package to implement behavioral experiments.
  • Write scripts in BASH and Unix operation systems.
  • Use shared code repositories such as GitHub or GitLab.
  • Train and assist graduate students, postdocs and research assistants.

Education Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, or equivalent education and relevant experience.
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience using Unix shell scripting and Python to accomplish scientific computing tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to use shared code repositories with version control.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to clearly document code.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in cognitive psychology, cognitive science, neuroimaging, human cognitive neuroscience, or bioinformatics. This can be demonstrated though through prior coursework, relevant research experience, work experience in related fields, and/or interest in pursuing advanced research or graduate training in psychology, neuroimaging, computational sciences, or bioengineering.
Desired Qualifications:
  • One year of prior research experience. Preferably in cognitive psychology, biology, neuroimaging, or neuroscience.
  • Experience with neuroimaging data analyses, including MRI.
  • Experience with high-performance computational cluster.
  • Experience in teaching computer programming.
