SUMMARY

The Senior Molecular Biologist focuses on providing a high level of technical knowledge, complex problem-solving skills and molecular testing related to COVID-19, to the South Dakota Public Health Laboratory under the South Dakota Department of Health. This position will also be responsible for using RT-PCR to screen COVID-positive specimens, implementing automated processes, and sequencing informatics. Position is performed in-person.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Promotes and encourages a culture of compliance with all applicable rules (federal, state, local, Federal Acquisition Regulations, Code of Federal Regulations, Prime Contract requirements, etc.) for themselves and the company as a whole. Fosters an environment in which they will reportanyviolations or reasonably suspected violation of CNI policy, FAR, and/or CFR and are comfortable discussing the myriad compliance, conflict, FAR, CFR, etc. issues that arise during the performance of a government contract.

Enhance both throughput and turnaround time for molecular testing and sequencing as it relates to the COVID-19 response.

Implement efficiency-improving measures for sequencing to include chemistry automation and enhanced post-sequencing data analysis.

Conduct COVID-19 mitigation activities such as education, testing and vaccination campaigns.

Reduce time-to-result through efficient improvements and physical support of bench-level testing.

Reviews, evaluates and provides critical comments on new or adapted microbiological, molecular, antigen and antibody assays to detect and confirm identification of biological agents.

Provides consultations to stakeholders regarding the medical and public health significance of the laboratory.

Evaluates statistical data and summarizes scientific reports required under various agreements and contracts.

Keeps abreast of laboratory technical updates relating to pathogenic microorganisms that could be implicated in public health emergencies.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and co-workers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree (preferred) in biological, physical sciences or closely related field with relevant coursework in microbiology and infectious disease, and experience with molecular diagnostics, next generation sequencing, laboratory risk assessments and development of biosafety policies and procedures.. Experience managing large data sets and analysis of raw data from next generation sequencing. Experience with full life-cycle laboratory program development, implementation, and management. Must be capable of predominantly self-directed work with technical and programmatic leadership as needed.

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

Must be able to obtain government security clearance

U.S. Citizens/Green Card only due to government or federal requirement

Proven ability to plan, organize activities and prioritize multiple processes simultaneously.

Knowledge of accepted techniques, methods and procedures for performing bacteriological, serological, mycological, virological, molecular biological, parasitological and other related new diagnostic procedures.

Ability to communicate effectively with accrediting, licensing and regulatory bodies and maintain effective communication with leadership and with external partners.

Meticulous, detail-oriented and capable of maintaining focus while performing repetitive tasks.

Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include clarity of vision both near and far. Ability to speak and hear. Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Potential for exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens. May be required to wear safety and personal protective equipment.
