This position is responsible for the leadership, vision, delivery, and evaluation of our veterinary social work program that provides direct support services to clients, employees, and community stakeholders. This position acts as the head of the Veterinary Social Work Services team, which includes a part-time (50%) Veterinary Social Worker and intern(s). This position works in collaboration with veterinary medical center staff, clinical students and faculty while working in the clinic. The VSWS Coordinator provides multifaceted emotional support to clients and employees, consultation regarding clients to veterinary staff, support services, short term interventions, and educational programs for employees of the hospital, and will be tasked with the development of additional veterinary social work programming related to supporting the increase of access to veterinary services to owners experiencing a barrier to care. This individual will also serve as a field instructor for a master's level social work internship program placement at the VMC. The VSWS Coordinator will work in concert with VMC staff, faculty, and our leadership team to foster an environment of mindful compassion and support within the hospital.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Clients
· Provide short term support, grief education and community resources by request from clients
· Provide referrals to community mental health professionals as requested
· Establish storage of client documentation that is confidential
· Provide individual and group support associated with the loss of companion animals for clients
· Aid clients in the end-of-life planning for their pet and communicate with VMC clinical team
· Provide support to clients by request from VMC clinical team
· Provide debriefing individually and/or in groups
· Provide support in mitigating compassion fatigue
VMC clinical team
· Develop or enhance wellness practices within the practice Education and Outreach
· Provide continuing education presentations for VMC clinical team, and referring veterinarians on compassion fatigue, self-care, human and animal bond, the Link, grief and loss, and communication
· Maintain and develop a resource list of therapists in the area who are interested in providing pet loss counseling support for clients
· Speak to community groups about veterinary social work services as needed
Unit Specific Education/Experience/SkillsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of graduate study beyond a Bachelor's degree, such as a Masters in Social Work; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a health/mental health environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and State certification as a Social Worker. ACSW may be required in order to provide primary supervision of social work students.
