The Research Operations & Infrastructure (ROI) team within the Office of the Vice Provost for Research & Scholarship (OVPRS) has an exciting job opportunity for a Senior Institutional Research Analyst to work at the University of Miami.

CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Sr. Institutional Research Analyst reports to the Director, Research Information Technology (IT). The Sr. Institutional Research Analyst is responsible for creating high-level financial institutional, state, and federal reports. Moreover, the incumbent will work with other sponsored project administration teams, investigators, and leadership to support the research enterprise and faculty in their scholarly pursuits. The incumbent in this position also performs systems analyst activities and makes recommendations in areas that require a high level of technical competency.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs necessary investigation, analysis, and evaluation to determine project feasibility.
  • Helps to develop project cost and benefit estimates to establish project worth, including the development of alternative considerations.
  • Leads the continued development of the OVPRS research data warehouse activities to ensure technical requirements align with business needs.
  • Responds to just-in-time requests quickly and accurately, which require the ability to effectively understand data and data sources and high-level business processes, quickly query and sometimes develop visualizations on that data, and deliver results in a professional format, often including an executive summary of findings and observations in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and leadership.
  • Reviews and approves all official research and related financial metrics for Office of the Vice Provost of Research and Scholarship (OVPRS) reports and presentations and the OIRE annual fact sheet; manages and ensures adherence to standard sponsored programs and OVPRS metric definitions.
  • Develops, maintains, and tests system integrations (i.e., API, webservices) to support business processes, supports reporting needs, data integrity, and eliminates duplication of data entry.
  • Advises appropriate people on the implications of existing IT systems that can be applied to a problem.
  • Develops and evaluates previously refined data and selects from various alternatives to determine the appropriate action to take.
  • Develops and provides research specific financial and business reports for university-wide use via university data marts.
  • Coordinates and prepares detailed cross-campus financial reports detailing the annual research expenditures by funding sources, types of expenditures, disciplines, and other breakdowns.
  • The data provided in this survey is the metric used to compare research universities across the country.
  • Establishes and maintains complex queries used for the majority of Research Administration and OVPRS Compliance Services reporting.
  • Develops back-end SQL database; models database design; develops (using PL/SQL programming) queries/views and procedures.
  • Migrates data from Oracle to SQL Server.
  • Responsible for state and federal reports and surveys related to Research (NSF HERD, Annual SEFA report, etc.
  • Provides data to campus stakeholders, the state, and federal agencies (state file reporting, IPEDS, US News, AAUP, Times Higher Education, NC-SARA).
  • Develops or assists in the development of work plans and task sequencing.
  • Specifies the number and types of records, files, and documents to be used.
  • Analyzes charts and diagrams of the problem to be programmed and defines system requirements regarding equipment capabilities.
  • Plans independently the full range of programming actions needed to achieve desired end results on complex problems.
  • Checks on, instructs, assigns work, and otherwise functionally directs junior staff.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics or relevant field.

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience. Any appropriate combination of relevant education and/or work experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
  • Skills in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Possess a strong understanding and working knowledge of Research Administration, and University business processes; other University systems, data, and database structures; and various reporting tools (Oracle SQL Developer, OBIEE, PowerBI).
  • Understanding in Research Administration and Sponsored Programs (preferred).
  • Experience with reporting to state and federal agencies as well as national surveys (such as state system reporting, IPEDS, NC-SARA, US News, NSF, NIH).
  • Demonstrated experience with SQL and its advanced features (correlated subqueries, rollup, expressions).
  • Proficient with a data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, SAS Visual Analytics) PowerBI preferred.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems concerning data to ensure reliability and integrity is of utmost importance.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle competing deadlines, deliver accurate work, and remain tactful and professional.
  • Knowledge with taking data across multiple data sources/platforms to build data warehouses.
  • Experience with implementing data warehouse security to ensure business units have visibility to their respective data.
  • Ability to create data dictionary documentation.
