Primary Role

This position will work on-site at the Pacific Grove, CA office.

Position Range: $71,136.00 to $134,676.00

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Responsible for organizing advanced functions and activities related to water quality and environmental compliances for assigned facilities. Responsible for maintaining all applicable certifications, accreditations, or approvals to conduct regulatory compliance and process quality control work. Implements programs to ensure compliance with all applicable water quality and environmental regulations related to Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and Clean Air Act. Assists in resolving water treatment issues. Investigates water quality complaints and determines course of action needed.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage monitoring and reporting programs to ensure compliance with federal and state water quality and environmental regulations as well as company standards for assigned facilities.
  • Manage required permits and make any necessary modifications and renewals.
  • Identify potential issues and problems and initiate responsive actions and mitigate environmental violations.
  • Obtain, prepare, file, and maintain all applicable regulatory compliance reports and records.
  • Manage and coordinate with Operations for waste management and site inspections
  • Coordinate the cross-connection compliance program for assigned facilities.
  • Conduct water quality sampling as assigned.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and represent American Water with regulators and customers.
  • Conduct advanced water quality and environmental compliance investigation projects and prepare reports as needed.
  • Investigate and respond to escalated water quality complaints or concerns.
  • Responsible for planning, preparing, and controlling the portion of the financial plan relating to responsibilities.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of chemistry and laboratory technique and QA/QC programs.
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental standards and regulations and understanding of current environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Regulatory knowledge of proper lab analytical testing methods.
  • Thorough processing skills and good working knowledge of computer programs, databases, and software to support specific assignments.
  • Must understand principles of water and/or wastewater treatment and be able to troubleshoot systems.
Process, project and program management skills; quantitative skills (e.g., analytical, technical, problem solving); effective people management (e.g., planning, organizing, controlling and leading teams); written and verbal communications (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations); interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting).

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science/engineering or related science fields.
  • Five (5) years' experience in water, wastewater, and laboratory operations or equivalent.
  • Water, Wastewater Operators' certifications, or American Water Works Association (AWWA) or American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA) Certification as a Cross Connection Control Specialist are highly desired.

License

Must hold a valid State issued Driver's License.
