Primary Function of Position:

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will help identify performance, cost, and reliability improvements for this system, and complete the development, documentation, and verification of these improvements.  The successful candidate will have both the technical depth to resolve complex mechanical, materials and manufacturing design issues and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to troubleshoot to root cause higher level system issues.  A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

 

  • Work in or lead cross-functional project teams to design, develop and verify modifications to robotic or other complex mechanisms.
    • Investigate and determine root cause of both latent and emerging design, manufacturing or material defects
    • Develop, design, test, document, and implement solutions for these defects according to corporate standard and departmental operating procedures
    • Provide mechanical engineering support for resolution of field and manufacturing issues
    • Investigate clinical requirements and contribute to the determination of future product release content
    • Identify alternate part fabrication methods to reduce hardware cost, then design and implement those alternatives.
    • Support engineering for alternate part sourcing, alternate fabrication processes and/or design change projects to reduce hardware cost and/or improve strength of supply chain  
  • Support the CAPA and CPIP processes and quality/regulatory audits as required
  • Provide technical advice and mentoring
  • Establish individual and team goals consistent with overall project goals

 

 

 

 

Skill/Job Requirements:

 

  • Minimum BSME required, MSME preferred. Minimum 12  years of experience designing and engineering of commercial mechanical and electromechanical products.  Experience with mechanism design, robotics and/or medical products are preferred.
  • Proven experience in a fast paced, high transaction, mass-production environment desired.
  • Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer to Manufacturing.
  • Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms in SolidWorks.
  • Hands-on engineering with the proven ability to work well in a team environment, including ability be the technical lead of large cross-functional projects
  • Proven proficiency at failure analysis
  • Strength in mechanical design and analysis skills, including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials and stress analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of component manufacturing processes (including machining, wire EDM, MIM, electro-polish, brazing, heat treatment, injection molding, Aluminum and Iron casting) is a plus
  • Familiarity with assembly and manufacture of mechanical assemblies including process development and creation of assembly instructions
  • Comfortable operating machine shop, measurement and test equipment
  • Strong understanding of component selection criteria and design for reliability and manufacturability
  • Experience with Statistical Process Control in a Mass Production environment is preferred
  • Proficient at process development and creation of assembly instructions
  • Experience with designing hardware products in an FDA or other regulated industry or for mission critical applications is desired; comfort with concepts of design input, design output, traceability, and FMEA risk analysis
  • Regulatory agency experience including UL, CE and FDA approval processes preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written, oral) across all levels and organizations
  • Ability to mentor other engineers
  • Ability to travel up to 10% time
  • A real excitement to learn and get to the bottom of tough technical problems
  • A passion for creating robust and reliable products
