Position Summary

The Tax Manager role is a position within the Firm Tax Department of the Investor Services division of The Carlyle Group, which is responsible for Firm global tax matters and strategy. The Tax Manager will work closely with other members of the Finance organization, especially members of the Tax and Corporate Accounting teams. The Tax Manager is responsible for manager level support to the Firm Tax Planning team, which oversees firm strategic planning projects and initiatives.

The Tax Manager will be responsible for providing manager level support to the Tax Planning Vice President and/or Principal. This involves the preparation and/or review of tax analysis, modelling, forecasting, tax memorandums and other documentation with respect to firm planning projects and initiatives as well as documenting key firm tax positions and policies. The focus of this role will be on US federal, state and international tax matters related to the Firm and our internal stakeholders/long term incentive programs.

The Tax Manager will also work with the members of the broader Finance organization and/or external service providers on various tax planning projects and Firm initiatives. The Tax Department is responsible for global tax matters, including, but not limited to tax compliance, tax planning, and evaluating the tax issues in Firm and Fund transactions.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

Firm Tax Planning

  • Prepare internal Firm tax policy memorandums to document key Firm tax positions for Tax Planning Vice President and/or Principal review. Coordinate with Firm tax compliance team to provide training/knowledge sharing.
  • Prepare and/or review process & procedure memorandums for various recurring firm tax projects for Tax Planning Vice President and/or Principal review. Coordinate with Firm tax compliance team to provide training/knowledge sharing and to facilitate transition of certain tax compliance analysis/calculations to the compliance team.
  • Assist the Tax Planning Vice President and/or Principal with research and analysis with respect to firm level transactions. Prepare tax analysis, modelling, forecasting, and/or documentation for review.
  • Assist the Tax Planning Vice President and/or Principal with research and analysis with respect to new firm strategies and or business initiatives. Prepare tax analysis, modelling, forecasting and/or documentation for review.
  • Assist Tax Planning Vice President with global carried interest planning and structuring initiatives, including documentation and review of global positions, new initiatives, analysing implication of legislative changes, and ad-hoc queries.
  • Review annual transfer pricing documentation, including the Master File and annual local file documentation. Coordinate with external service providers on information requests and deliverables.
  • Monitor and stay current on US, State, & International tax legislative changes impacting the Firm. Prepare presentations/memorandums as needed for Tax Planning Vice President and/or Principal review. Coordinate with the broader firm tax compliance team to provide training/knowledge sharing.
  • Coordinate with external advisors (as needed) on various firm tax planning initiatives & projects, including project management and review of client deliverables.
  • Assist Firm tax compliance team in risk based review of key tax return positions, as needed.
Process Improvement, Team Collaboration and Other Responsibilities
  • Prepare monthly Firm tax planning/Firm tax compliance team meeting materials for Tax Planning Vice President and Principal review. Responsible for oversight of meeting, including coordination with the Firm tax compliance team on hand-offs and follow up items.
  • Coordinate Tax planning team hand-offs and drive collaboration and proactive communication, training, and knowledge sharing with the broader tax team to manage risk and improve processes (including the Firm tax compliance team, Firm tax reporting team and Firm tax controller team) as well as key stakeholders outside the tax team, for example Corporate Accounting.
  • Identify, make recommendations and lead efforts to drive process efficiencies and enhancements in various planning workflows, including optimizing coordination/collaboration and knowledge sharing efforts with firm tax compliance team and documentation of recurring processes.
  • Coordinate with other internal stakeholders (Tax Compliance Tax Operations, Tax Controller, Corporate Accounting, HCM, Global Employment Tax, etc.) to provide tax related information and answer tax related queries.
  • Assist Tax reporting team with review and/or preparation of quarterly annual tax provision, as needed.
  • Other projects as applicable.


Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience
  • 5-8 years accounting/tax experience required
  • C corporation tax, partnership tax, and/or federal/state tax compliance experience preferred
  • Private equity experience preferred
Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Economics degree required
  • GPA of 3.0 or above required
  • CPA or CPA-eligible required
  • Master's degree in Taxation a plus
