The Admissions office at Chapman University is searching for a team oriented candidate(s) to add to their already amazing team!

The Admission Counselor/Assistant Director is responsible for the outreach activities within assigned geographic territories, including maintenance and follow up with inquiring prospective students, parents, and school counselors. This position(s) will represent the University by participating in both virtual and in-person college fairs and coordinating school visits, events and receptions. After appropriate training, the Admission Counselor/Assistant Director will compile and analyze data for planning, implementation, and evaluation of outreach activities. This position(s) will manage file reading caseload for assigned territories, participate on the University Admission Committee including presentations of assigned applicants, assist with day to day operations including making presentations to visiting groups, participate in transfer advising appointments and manage special projects as assigned. This position(s) travel schedule is four to six weeks annually.

In addition, other special projects include collaborating with campus constituents to further develop strong relationships with important stakeholders in the assigned territory, develop data-driven strategies in the recruitment territory and represent the Office of Admission as a liaison to other on campus departments. Attend and participate in professional development activities and associations. Assist throughout the year in the development and implementation of the new student enrollment plan including our messages for information sessions, receptions, and staff training.


The responsibilities would include:

  • Work with Directors in the development of recruitment plans and strategies for on and off campus activities that are in alignment with the Admissions Office and Chapman's enrollment goals, missions and values.
  • Research and evaluate the demographic and academic characteristics of an assigned geographic territory, school group, and/or traditionally underrepresented student groups to create an annual recruitment outreach plan and develop market analysis and competitor intelligence.
  • Represent the university at college fairs and school visits
  • Follow up with prospective students, parents, school counselors
  • Travel four to six weeks annually for recruitment in assigned territories or other Admission-related activities such as receptions.
  • Develop individualized student admissions programs to ensure conversations between the applicant and the University remain positive and productive.
  • Conduct presentations with visiting groups including performing counselor of the day responsibilities. Interview prospective students to evaluate suitability for admission.
  • Advise prospects and applicants on requirements, general education, majors, financial aid/scholarship opportunities, and outcomes. Read/review assigned applications
  • Manage file reading case load including presentations of assigned applicants to admission committee.
  • As a member of the University Admission Committee, participate in the full admission process.
  • Work with a designated academic unit and student affairs unit in facilitating the process for students interested in that area.
  • With training, compile data for planning, implementation, and evaluation of outreach efforts. Participate in the strategic planning of university outreach efforts.
  • Participate in professional development activities including conferences and affiliations (currently WACAC Admission Practices Committee member).
  • Manage special projects as assigned by director.
Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination in education and experience. High level working knowledge of University programs, policies and procedures.
  • Must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on a daily basis.
  • A minimum of 1-4 years of experience in admissions, college counseling or related experience.
  • Strong organizational and presentation skills to prioritize schedules, projects and resources, and to meet deadlines and to persuasively communicate/connect with target audiences
  • Demonstrate effective written, oral, and interpersonal skills; proven ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and demonstrate tact, diplomacy, leadership and represent academic programs in a positive manner.
  • Excellent time management skills with the energy and flexibility to coordinate multiple assignments, set priorities, and work under pressure in a demanding, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to travel inside and outside the U.S. during annual recruitment/outreach cycles, including weekends and evenings
  • Accountable to provide outstanding student-centered service both on campus and in assigned travel regions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals at all societal levels; sensitivity and understanding of individual student and family needs and cultural diversity.
  • Proven ability to evaluate data, assess alternatives, and make decisions appropriate at the position level.
  • Computer skills preferably using Microsoft Office Suite and Google documents and the ability to learn and use enterprise software
  • Clear understanding of the mission of Chapman University. Working knowledge of higher education admission and enrollment policies and procedures, with sensitivity and understanding of individual prospective student and family needs.
  • Accountable for actively recruiting students electronically and in person through effective communication consistent with Chapman's mission.
  • Accountable for building strong and positive relationships with constituent populations.
  • Accountable to effectively review applications with objectivity and be able to demonstrate independent judgment and decision making in the process.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the liberal arts and ability to communicate the value of a liberal arts education to students and other outside constituents.
