POSITION: Distribution Construction Intern (Union Scholar)

NUMBER OF VACANCIES: 8

LOCATION: UIE-CT-Operations

Responsibilities

• Develop a basic understanding of construction specification and become familiar with the basics of electricity dealing with high and low voltage distribution line construction; understand proper use of equipment tools and equipment operation.
• Safely setting up work zones, tools and cleaning up when complete, and overall awareness on hazards of the construction work and outside impacts to work being performed.
o Must follow company safety policies and safe working practices to avoid injury or accident when working in a hazardous environment.
o Works safely in a team environment, listens and follows directions given by others. Receives and accepts training, instruction, and advice from assigned supervisors, chiefs, working leaders, and other journeyman line workers.
• OH - Safely performs, under supervision, all types of transmission and distribution pole line work including climbing poles, installation of poles, cross-arms, transformers, cutouts, lightning arrestors, wire and cable and all other

material related to line construction.
• UG - Review job documentation, assist with UG utility locating all with fully qualified worker to understand what is being done to setup the job and getting ready for the distribution work.
• Intern is responsible for developing knowledge and experience through routine check ins.
o Learns and develops skills in the placement of poles in and around energized lines.
o Trainers will provide overview of truck operation; interns will understand the safety considerations needed to work with these trucks on a construction job site. Work around safe Operating overhead line equipment with care not

to damage existing equipment or harm others Ex: bucket trucks, derrick trucks and booms when working on, installing, or shifting equipment.
o Acquires understanding of the effective and safe operating methods in the use of rubber gloves and sleeves.
o Responsible for understanding the safe operations of motor vehicles, derrick, bucket trucks, and other heavy equipment and tools while adhering to company/OSHA standards.
o Developing knowledge about work on energized lines and equipment in accordance with Company regulations.
o Aware of day-to-day activity of Hazardous waste management system and oil spill clean-up procedures.
• Prepares and keeps such records as may be require and performs other appropriate work as may be assigned.
• Proper Handling and use of materials and equipment on jobs.
• Majority of the work will be assigned but general responsibility for own work is required.
• Constant care necessary when working with employees that are driving trucks or operating equipment to avoid injuries to others.

Skills and Requirements

• Must be sixteen (16) years of age and in high school, preferably with additional technical training and mechanical aptitude.
• Must have a valid drivers' license, with a safe driving record or be obtaining one.
• Is subject to the Company's pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Must be available to work extended duration with short notice.
• Ability to perform work in all types of weather (hot/cold).
• Must continuously work within company safety policies and procedures.
• Must be capable of performing all the essential job functions in the classification.
• Demonstrate the ability of working at heights up to 65', climbing wood poles and use of ladders.
• Must obtain and maintain First Aid & CPR Certifications (to be obtained prior to offer).
• Must be able to refer to and interpret drawings, sketches, written instructions, and work orders.
• Must be able to use measuring tools, mobile data terminal and testing instruments.
• Some judgement is required to interpret and carry out instructions under minimum supervision.
• Care and dependability to perform job duties efficiently.
• Requires Heavy lifting and ergonomic awareness (50lbs).

• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Must be a proven team player who develops team working relationships.
• Moderate physical demand: effort to drive vehicles, operate equipment, and to handle tools, materials and equipment varying in size and weight.
• Continue mental and visual attention to carry out instructions, and perform duties efficiently.
• Outdoor work in all kinds of weather.
• Willingness to work overtime, to handle storm or emergency work.
