This is a part-time position.

Introduction: Church World Service (CWS) is a not-for-profit, faith-based organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable solutions to hunger, poverty, displacement and disaster. Primary Purpose:The Community Liaison will report to and work closely with the Community Organizer to support outreach and relationship building efforts with refugee and immigrant communities. Additionally, the Community Liaison will work with the Community Organizer to develop refugee and immigrant leaders, create educational opportunities, and facilitate events and meetings that promote the welcome of refugees and immigrants across North Carolina.

Essential Duties:

  • Support the Community Organizer by carrying out civic engagement opportunities, leadership training and development opportunities, and support the mobilization and participation of refugee and immigrant leaders in various initiatives.
  • Connect refugee leaders with immigrant and refugee rights allies and partners in the Triad.
  • Support the Community Organizer in engaging youth by helping with event and program coordination, facilitating presentations and leading various activities.
  • Support the Community Organizer with organizing and planning meetings with local, state, and federal government officials to educate policy makers about refugee resettlement and promote welcoming attitudes and policies.
  • Identify opportunities for Community Organizer to connect refugee leaders through leadership skill building opportunities.
  • Support the Community Organizer in conducting trainings on community organizing, leadership development, voter registration, “How to tell your story Trainings,” civic engagement, media outreach, messaging, and sharing personal stories with refugees and supporters.
  • Support the Community Organizer in engaging refugee leaders on social media, like WhatsApp and Facebook
  • Work with CWS staff to increase visibility and awareness of refugee resettlement program through traditional methods and social media.
  • Provide support to refugee and immigrant leaders by connecting leaders to various resources.
  • Keep informed about refugee and immigrant issues, and available services to refugees, using current information to better identify and serve refugee clients.
  • Attend trainings and conferences as requested by supervisor.
  • Represent the program at meetings and speaking engagements relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.
  • Work varied hours, including some nights and evening.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and suitable vehicle.
Qualifications:

Experience: Familiarity with immigration and refugee issues. At least 2 years’ experience working with immigrants or refugees on community projects or grassroots efforts. Must have experience conducting training and developing resources, planning events, and working with partners from diverse faith traditions, immigrant and human rights organizations, and service providers. Well organized, with excellent communication, writing and speaking skills. Ability to travel domestically. Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, as some evening, weekend, and off-site work may be required.

Skills: Fluency in languages spoken by refugees in the United States (ex: Swahili, Somali, Nepali, Karen, Arabic, French) preferred. The successful candidate must be computer literate, with proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word and Excel) and internet applications.

Competencies:

Communications: Represent CWS in varied forums, effectively interpreting its mission, values and programs and inspiring audiences to support its work. Conduct dealings with local stakeholders with integrity and sensitivity, ensuring all relevant information is clearly communicated and documented.

Local Organizing: Coordinate local activists at the regional level and help build local organizing teams with strategies to realize concrete changes in people's lives. Increase contacts and outreach efforts. Take direction from the CWS Community Organizer. Work to build leadership development, civic engagement and organizing capacity among refugee populations.

Constituent Relationships: Identify potential constituents with whom to build relationships within the context of building welcome for refugees. Resolve issues of concern to maintain effective constituent relationships.

Job Knowledge: Possess an understanding of refugee resettlement, immigration, and perceptions about refugees in North Carolina. Identify learning opportunities for self and others and take/ recommend actions. Keep up to date with “best practices” and recommend procedures that balance business performance with CWS’s ministry and values.

Leadership Development: Communicate and model CWS’s mission, values and priorities to refugees, immigrants, and stakeholders. Build core leadership structures among refugee and immigrant groups so they can further their organizing work on a sustainable level. Use civic engagement programs as a way to build new leaders among refugees. Enable and empower refugees and immigrants to take initiative and be creative.

Problem Solving: Identify problems that undermine the effectiveness and recommend workable solutions, considering the costs, benefits and potential consequences. Enable others to learn from the problem-solving experience by involving them in examining and resolving problems, ensuring solutions are appropriate to the scope of the problem.

Teamwork: Promote effective interactions among refugee and immigrant groups and facilitate group discussion. Network with other teams to discuss activities and make decisions on goals and activities that may intersect. Negotiate issues that cause conflicts within the team to support effective team functioning. Evaluate team results and individual team member performance, identifying needs and providing opportunities for improvement or enhancing team skills. Provide critical insight and feedback to teams to enhance performance and results.

  • Fluency in a common refugee language is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment required.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and willingness to support CWS’ Platform on Racial Justice as a CWS employee required.
Education & Certifications: High school diploma or GED.
