Multiple Interns, Cell Press US Editorial Internship Program

Are you curious/enthusiastic about a career in scientific publishing? If so, we may have the perfect experience for you.

Cell Press has multiple openings in our US Editorial Internship program for qualified graduate students, those who have recently finished a graduate program, and/or are pursuing post-doctoral training. The program provides interns with hands-on experience with the day-to-day routines of Scientific Editors at a major scientific publishing organization. You will learn how scientific research goes from submission to publication, and you will have the opportunity to collaborate with other teams across the editorial, production, communication, and marketing departments. You will walk away with experience in science editing and communications, publishing process, and a unique non-academic/non-industrial mentorship. A laptop will be provided for the duration of the internship.

We encourage applications from students and postdocs from underrepresented minority groups, including people of color and from economically and historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Timing, compensation, and timing

Timing: Start dates have some flexibility throughout the year. Positions will last for 16 weeks part-time at 20 hours per week or 8 weeks full-time at 40 hours per week, with some flexibility.

Stipend: $6,400 for the program at $20/hour (payable biweekly).

Location: Currently virtual because of COVID-19. Qualified candidates can work off-site, with the option of visiting Cell Press offices as needed. No housing or relocation assistance is offered.

To apply, please submit:

  • A resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in the position.
  • A personal I&D statement (no more than 300 words) demonstrating how you might contribute to the missions of Cell Press.
  • A selection of 6-8 recently published articles that you feel capture the broad range of biological research (provide the full reference and link to the article and give a brief rationale for your choice).
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and will be held in the strictest of confidence. Due to the competitive nature of the internship, finalists will be asked to take a writing test and supply approval of participation from their advisor. A pre-employment screening will be part of our hiring process.

Tasks will include:
  • Assisting with manuscript STAR Methods checks for journals.
  • Proof-reading and line-editing Previews, Reviews, Perspectives, and other Front matter pieces.
  • Developing and posting social media content, journal cover art, and more.
  • Completing weekly timesheet at the end of each week.
  • Participating in a variety of manuscript-oriented projects.

Ideal Candidate Skills and Experience
  • Candidates should be working towards or have recently completed a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline across the biological, physical, and medical sciences.
