Summary Statement

Are you looking for a fun seasonal job, working outside, surrounded by the sights and sounds of world-wide wildlife? Zoo Boise is seeking a self-motivated and energetic individual to join its team as Zoo Custodial/Maintenance personnel.
This position:

  • Performs custodial duties and at times assists with general maintenance and repairs to Zoo Boise facilities and grounds
  • Assists with a wide variety of construction, hard surface maintenance and repair, mowing, landscaping, and related duties
  • Work is performed under supervision
  • Is open to all interested persons age 19 and older
  • Works up to 9 months a year
  • Is designated as At-Will

Essential Functions

Performs janitorial duties in facility restrooms. Uses appropriate chemicals to achieve sanitary results. Empties 30-gallon trash receptacles, line containers with a plastic bag, replace lids, and pick up scattered debris and litter throughout the zoo.
Performs semi-skilled mechanical duties, carpentry, painting, and masonry. Assists with minor construction and repairs of buildings, exhibits, and irrigation systems. Operates light equipment such as weed-eaters, and lawnmowers. Performs landscape and horticulture duties including seeding, irrigation, mowing grounds and landscaped areas, planting, pruning, weeding, and cultivating flowers, shrubs, and trees. Applies herbicides and fertilizer. Shovels and rakes gravel and dirt. Replaces bedding materials and compacts soil. Performs seasonal duties such as snow and leaf removal. Answers questions from the general public as they arise.
Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, and Training
  • Working knowledge of general facilities maintenance including minor mechanical and construction methods and safety standards
  • Hand and power tools such as nail guns and other common tools, general landscape care
  • Ability to perform varied facilities maintenance and cleaning
  • Safely operate a wide variety of equipment, tools, and chemicals; safely utilize related protective gear and safety equipment
  • Identify and prioritize additional tasks, display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies, and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance
  • Perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Capable of operating vehicles safely and having an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, and Training
  • 1 year of experience performing custodial or facilities maintenance duties
Licensing and Other Requirements
  • Valid state-issued driver's license


Special Requirements
All applicants must be able to successfully pass City of Boise background check processes which include reference checks and criminal history checks.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 35 lbs, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 75 lbs, and rarely lifting/carrying up to 101 + lbs. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 35 lbs, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 lbs, and rarely pushing/pulling up to 101 + lbs. The noise level is occasionally loud. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear, touch and feel. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, wet and humid conditions, with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases and other airborne matter. Employees work in/at heights and are exposed to mechanical, and electrical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. In and around large and dangerous animal exhibits. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, and chemicals.
This position works days, evenings, and weekends as required.
