JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Professor of Research Writing will work in collaboration with the DEAL Program Director and Dissertation Directors in many aspects to support doctoral students in all locations and modalities in academic writing. This person creates instructional content for the program and meets with individual learners, as needed, to enhance their understanding of writing skills necessary to fulfill all dissertation writing expectations. Additionally, this person will work closely with students who have completed all program course requirements and who need additional support to complete remaining dissertation requirements. The Assistant Professor of Research Writing serves as the Academic Writing Specialist committee member on all proposal and defense meetings each semester and will co-teach ED-7663 Literature Review with Dissertation Directors each semester.
The School of Graduate Studies in Education and Leadership (GSEL) seeks to develop highly qualified leaders who contribute to their fields of study and inspire meaningful change. The EdD program currently serves more than 200 students representing diverse backgrounds, cultures, and identities. The successful Assistant Professor of Research brings diverse lived experiences and representative perspectives to provide expertise for current and relevant research topics. Additionally, this person is culturally responsive in recognizing and honoring the uniqueness of each individual learner and engaging in diverse viewpoints to foster a supportive and inclusive academic environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:
- Co-teach the literature review courses with Dissertation Directors each semester.
- Maintain familiarity with current graduate catalog and EdD program dissertation policies and procedures.
- Support policies and procedures to ensure adequate progress on dissertation is being made
- Review all proposals and dissertations to ensure adherence to the most current version of APA style and the SNU dissertation template.
- Edit and provide constructive feedback sensitively and effectively on proposals and dissertations to help students strengthen overall structure, clarity, and style.
- Maintain familiarity with the current APA standards adopted by the DEAL program.
- Offer individual assistance, workshops, and focused class sessions on APA current edition writing expectations for DEAL students.
- Create writing resources, including handout, guides, and presentations, for various aspects of the dissertation writing process.
- Consult with individual students who need extra writing support to discuss their writing projects, offer feedback, and develop strategies for improvement.
- Stay abreast of current trends and best practices in academic writing pedagogy and in research methodologies for qualitative and quantitative studies.
- Participate in the proposal defense and dissertation defense meetings for all students when assigned as their Academic Writing Specialist.
- Collaborate with Dissertation Directors and committee members to assist students in developing quality proposals and dissertations.
- Be consistent and timely in communication with DEAL students.
- Represent the program on appropriate committees related to the EdD program.
- Collaborate with the appropriate university leadership and Intercultural Faculty Fellows to ensure cultural issues are addressed.
- Assist with planning and hosting the program orientation workshop and proposal workshop two times each year.
- Plan and conduct sessions on topics related to academic writing for both the program orientation and the proposal workshop
- Encourage learners to submit dissertation proposals and findings to national conferences and support them through the application process.
- Participate in and assist with planning all program celebratory events and commencement ceremonies.
- Attend departmental meetings and support all departmental activities throughout the year.
- Be actively engaged in a research agenda.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- An understanding of the importance for diversity, inclusion, and equity.
- Terminal degree in a social sciences field from a regionally accredited institution
- An understanding of qualitative and quantitative research designs
- An awareness and appreciation of adult learning theory
- Hold or willingness to obtain a current IRB Training Certification
- Strong oral and written communication skills
