The Student Outreach Coordinator at New Directions Secondary School in The Bronx focuses on supporting students who are chronically and severely chronically absent from school. The Student Outreach Coordinator works in the field by going into the students' community to conduct home visits.

The purpose of the home visits are to assess and better understand the barriers that keep students from attending school and to problem solve solutions. The Student Outreach Coordinator addresses the barriers and social-emotional needs of the students by providing referrals and linkage to resources and services (within and outside of the school) as needed.

The Student Outreach Coordinator works closely with the school's attendance social worker and team to identify students who require outreach services, case management, and follow-up. The Student Outreach Coordinator position is a 10-month position (September - June), 40 hours per week, and will be supervised by the Site Manager.

  • Responsible for providing outreach and support to a rotating caseload of absent students (chronically and severely chronically especially) students. Will review attendance and academic progress and provide students and families with continuous feedback and resources to meet their needs and ensure academic success
  • Conducts daily student attendance outreach
  • Provides outreach to students and their families, including phone calls, written correspondence, and home visits
  • Facilitates communication between students, families, and school staff
  • Completes required documentation in a timely manner
  • Provides crisis support and social-emotional support when on-site at school as needed, with emphasis in Restorative Justice practices (with guidance and supervision from site manager)
  • Completes regular assessments and provides resource referrals in support of school-based services (with guidance and supervision of the site manager)
  • Participates in staff meetings and staff development opportunities
  • Collaborates on transdisciplinary team of Wediko and school staff to create individualized plans to support student progress

    Qualifications
      • Bilingual Spanish and English required
      • Bachelor's Degree required; Social Science degree preferred
      • 1-3 years' experience providing direct services in school-based or residential programs
      • Ability to approach challenges in a supportive and creative manner
      • Commitment to ongoing learning and development
      • Excellent organization and prioritization skills
      • Occasional evening and weekend hours required
