Advertised Job Summary:

The Chief Engineer is responsible for development and daily operations of projects related to the MACH-ADE project and related projects at the MCNAIR Center. The Chief Engineer reports to the Project Director (Principal Investigator) and works with co-principal investigators, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students to support the entire scope of research activities in this and related laboratory spaces. The scope of activities includes design and development of advanced manufacturing and related scientific components and systems including cross-disciplinary supporting systems such as machinery systems, modeling and simulation, hardware in the simulation loop, real time data acquisition, and control of systems. Real time computing is inherent in many of these activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and 3 or more years of experience, which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.
U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and foreign nationals eligible for International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) licensure are eligible to apply and must comply with ITAR and CUI project requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field. Experience operating advanced manufacturing equipment in a relevant environment. Professional Engineers license or other certification relevant to advanced manufacturing.
Experience with project management. Experience with advanced composites manufacturing.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Understanding of advanced manufacturing equipment, data acquisition and computing, use of simulation models for designing and operating equipment. Data acquisition and controls. Understanding the safety implications of equipment usage.
  • Excellent analytical skills, and ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects, to organize and prioritize tasks, make critical decisions, and to operate efficiently in a research environment with rapidly evolving and sometimes-competing needs.
  • Familiar with or able to quickly learn university and industry safety requirements and regulations such as OSHA, ANSI, NEC, USC Health and Safety.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken forms, using language appropriate to the technical domain.
  • Proficient with general computing skills, and use of MS Office software including MS Project.

Job Duty:

COORDINATE CONSTRUCTION AND ASSEMBLY of a Testbed to support the MACH-ADE project and related projects. Under advice of the Principal Investigator (PI), complete design and implementation details, supervise installation of supporting utilities, and coordinate component installation and commissioning of the Testbed. Includes responsibility for cross-disciplinary supporting systems. Assist in development of simulation models of the Testbed, operation of simulation models with hardware in the simulation loop, configuration of real time data acquisition systems, and controls for advanced manufacturing systems. Real time computing is a component.

SUPERVISE LABORATORY OPERATIONS: Ensure operational readiness of the laboratory to conduct scheduled experiments. Work with faculty, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students and undergraduate students to configure and test devices and systems, offering technical guidance or advice as appropriate. Manage engineering lab day-to-day operations including lab organization, access control and security, compliance with applicable regulations, and adherence to safety protocols. Maintain highest standards of confidentiality and protection of intellectual property. Develop Standard Operating Procedures and Safety Procedures for laboratory equipment facilities. Train new researchers in these procedures as part of the on-boarding process. Supervise preparation of the laboratory for customer visits, demonstrations, and guest tours. Manage repositories of technical data. Track and report laboratory assets (inventory management).

SUPPORT ACHIEVEMENT OF RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: Assist researchers in the planning, design, and execution of experiments involving hardware in the simulation loop, real time computing, data acquisition systems, and advanced manufacturing systems. Assist in data collection, reduction, and preparation for reports and publications. Plan and recommend improvements to laboratory facilities and assist in preparation of budgets and proposals related to the laboratory.
