Job Description:

The advertised role is for the U.S. remote position of climate change scientist (data science):

We are seeking a new candidate to join an existing team of climate scientists and industry experts within CoreLogic's Global Risk Team. Our group develops climate informed catastrophe risk models to project the future risks of climate change to individual building structures across the contiguous United States and beyond. As a climate data scientist, you possess a deep understanding of data science tools and Earth system processes, including the effects of climate change on extreme weather events. In this role, your thought leadership contributes new insights and functionalities from existing CoreLogic climate products and catastrophe models. Collaborating with our experts and scientists, you will expand CoreLogic's capabilities in modeling impacts from climate perils such as drought, heat waves, and extreme weather using an arsenal of statistical and machine learning approaches.

What You Will Do:

Essential job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Sourcing and processing both raw and standardized climate/meteorological datasets for present and future climate change scenarios.
  • Maintaining existing models for CoreLogic's climate change perils, expanding these models to additional countries/ regions, and developing new techniques to incorporate additional data and methods as they become available.
  • Engaging external collaborators and subject matter experts for data acquisition, model development, and review.
  • Carrying out deep dive literature reviews to address specific modeling challenges, to identify novel approaches that enhance our existing climate models/ datasets, and to remain aware of the state of the art in your field of expertise and climate/ hazard modeling more generally.
  • Performing analyses and synthesizing insights from our climate products for distribution to internal teams and CoreLogic's global clients.

Job Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Earth Sciences, Math/ Statistics, Computer Science, or closely related areas)
  • Three years of work or research experience
  • Specialization in an Earth system or climate discipline as demonstrated through relevant research or industry experience.
  • Strong mathematical foundation with focus on applying statistical/ data science techniques to natural systems (e.g. extreme value analysis, multi-variable regression, feature selection, noise reduction/ filtering, additional machine learning methods).
  • Solid understanding of the Earth system, climate processes, feedbacks, and anthropogenic climate change.
  • Familiarity with future climate projections from Phase 5 or 6 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5/6) models.
  • Strong ability in one or more programming languages (e.g. C++, R, Python).
  • Experience processing, analyzing, and building models with large and complex geospatial datasets.
  • Some experience in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines, collaborate with other team members to define project objectives, and work independently on individual tasks.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and summarize insights and analyses through maps, visualizations, and text.

Advantageous:

Possessing any of these additional qualities, skills, or attributes is considered beneficial:
  • Ph.D. in a relevant subject (e.g. Earth Sciences, Math/ Statistics, Computer Science, or closely related areas) plus two years of experience.
  • Prior experience developing or using regionally/ locally downscaled climate datasets.
  • Relevant experience with a climate modeling organization/firm, re/insurance company/broker, or catastrophe model vendor.
  • Peer-reviewed scientific publications in areas related to climate and extreme weather risk and/or climate change.
  • Experience with machine learning approaches to sub-grid-scale processes (e.g. urban heat waves, convective storms) or emulating physics-based land-surface models (e.g. numerical wildfire simulation, hydrological modeling).
  • Experience communicating complex scientific and risk modelling concepts to external stakeholders (in a commercial setting).
  • Familiarity with catastrophe risk modelling - particularly with respect to flood, wildfire, or severe convective storm.
  • Postdoctoral research experience.

Annual Pay Range:
90,100 - 150,000 USD
