The Director of Health Services provides clinical and administrative leadership of all campus medical services. As a leader within the Student Life division, the Director assesses student health and wellness needs towards implementation of innovative practices, programs, and services that address those needs. The Director of Health Services is the university’s primary resource in response to critical health related incidents and public health threats on campus, including management of and effective communication about public health issues.

Job Summary:

The Director demonstrates strong administrative and collaborative skills within Health Services through team leadership and ongoing development. The Director coordinates care and leadership with clinical and professional staff within Health Services and Student Life, while strategically collaborating across campus and maintaining a direct partnership with EMU Athletics. The Director gives leadership to Health services practices, ensuring continuous quality management and improvement in all Health Center programs and services.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Directs Health Services administrative operations, and establishes, reviews, and updates policies and procedures, including all safety, compliance, and risk management policies and applications.
  • Serves as the EMU liaison in implementing and monitoring the health care partnership with counseling services and external medical services.
  • Administers clinical services to EMU students and provides clinical support to other medical providers.
  • Maintains and monitors student health benefit services and ensures insurance billing rates are at market rate based on location.
  • Presents information about the Health Center operations to parents and prospective students and coordinates the acquisition and review of health records for new students.
  • Maintains and monitors contracts with: Electronic Record provider (Medicat), Insurance Clearinghouse (WayStar), Insurance billing provider (PriorityMedicalBilling), Medical Director and other provider contracts.
  • Maintains and monitors credentialing for EMU Providers and with CMS (centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services).
  • Manages the budget for Health Services.
  • Supervises and evaluates the Health Services staff, including scheduling and orientation to responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with other Student Life leaders on outreach, wellness, and prevention programs.
  • Coordinates services to Departments across campus that have medical requirements, ie: Nursing, Education, Retention, BioMed, Early Learning Center, and Custodial Services.
  • Collects data and completes evaluation and assessment of all activities of the Health Center ensuring alignment to Student Life priorities and the University strategic plan.
Required Skills/Abilities: 
  • Ability to maintain licensure in the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage healthcare billing and health insurance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles and purpose of student development and a firm commitment to student growth and development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ethical and legal practices of the student affairs profession.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze information for effective decision making.
  • Ability to organize 
  • Attention to detail for accurately preparing and maintaining accurate records, correspondence, administer test, and coordinate information.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to deal effectively with a variety of situations and constituents.
  • Ability to lead with initiative and confidence in public relations as well as interpersonal and group settings.
  • Ability to take initiative, set goals, prioritize and organize job tasks and workload in order to meet deadlines, ability to complete work in a timely manner and communicate progress routinely.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, critically, and creatively.
  • Ability to use a PC, student information systems and software such as, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Medicat.
  • Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as a copy machine, fax, phone, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Ability to use cultural competency to establish rapport with a wide variety of constituents such as students, faculty/staff, administration, and community partners.
  • Ability to build relationships that balance the multiple, varying, and sometimes conflicting interest of diverse stakeholders.
  • Observe and enforce professional standards including the maintenance of strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA and FERPA.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and materials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high standards of customer service.
  • Ability to work hours outside of the normal work schedule, such as evenings and weekends.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in nursing, and a minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare and administrative position, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.Valid nursing license in the Commonwealth of Virginia required.  Master’s degree in nursing preferred. Experience in a higher education environment is preferred.

 

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel.   The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.  The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises 2-3 regular staff and student staff members who support health services.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
