Job Description

SUMMARY: As Director of Payroll, you will be responsible for configuring and maintaining the systems and applications that support payroll, time and absence management across Stride. You will work closely with HR, IT, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure the systems are functioning properly, accurately, and securely. You will showcase your experience by championing enhancements and providing creative solutions to promote efficiency, effectiveness, and new thinking within the Stride Finance organization. This role will report directly to the Asst. Controller.

  • Demonstrates expert-level knowledge of Workday Payroll
  • Manages and guarantees bi-weekly and on-demand (as necessary) disbursement of multi-state payroll, including garnishments, benefits, and taxes to all employees and agencies consistent with federal and state wages and hour laws
  • Designs and implements short-term and long-term strategies to achieve continuous improvement in payroll processing and delivery operations
  • Directly engages with Stride Finance and other key cross-functional leadership to deliver regular Key Performance Indicator (KPI) briefings and other ad hoc management reporting (as requested)
  • Develops budgets and policies and procedures to support the functional area infrastructure
  • Manages relationship with 3rd party payroll fulfillment services provider
  • Manages relationships with tax vendors and manages overall payroll tax compliance
  • Understand the integration touchpoints within Workday between Payroll and Absence & Time Tracking
  • Effectively delegate tasks to a team spanning Payroll, Absence, and Time Tracking functions
  • Works with the HRIS team to implement innovative programs and processes for the Payroll Department
  • Advanced knowledge of payroll processes and procedures including pay calculations, tax reciprocity rules and regulations, and tax geographical location taxation rules
  • Must perform well in a high-energy, dynamic, and collaborative environment
  • Oversees payroll-specific internal business process controls (SOX) and engages with internal/external audit requests

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Directly supervises 3 - 5 Full-time Equivalent (FTE) regular employees and/or contractors.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10 years managerial experience
  • 5 years Workday payroll experience
  • 5 years Workday reporting experience
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.); Web proficiency.
  • Ability to clear required background check

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS/Certifications:
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)
  • Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC)
  • Financial systems experience (NetSuite preferred)

Candidates must be available to travel to Stride's corporate headquarters at least 10% of the time. The noise level in the office is usually moderate (computers, printers, light foot traffic).

This position is virtual and open to residents of the 50 states, D.C.; preference will be given to candidates in the Washington D.C./Reston, VA area.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Stride, Inc. considers a person's education, experience, and qualifications, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value when determining a new employee's salary level. Salaries will differ based on these factors, the position's level and expected contribution, and the employee's benefits elections. Offers will typically be in the bottom half of the range.

We anticipate the salary range to be $111,036 - $200,746.50. Eligible employees may receive a bonus. This salary is not guaranteed, as an individual's compensation can vary based on several factors. These factors include, but are not limited to, geographic location, experience, training, education, and local market conditions. Stride offers a robust benefits package for eligible employees that can include health benefits, retirement contributions, and paid time off.
