Job Description

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (EH&S Specialist) ensures that the assigned laboratory is in compliance with all corporate EH&S policies and procedures and will strive for continuous improvement. The duties include utilizing management tools, training staff on the EH&S requirements, and serving as an expert resource on all local EH&S activities. The EH&S Specialist also manages the laboratory's courier and shipping staff and is responsible for their onboarding, training, and ensuring their compliance with all fleet and shipping policies and procedures. Must live a commutable distance to Cedar Falls, IA. The schedule is Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors laboratory for unsafe conditions or acts to keep lab in compliance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan, EH&S Procedures, and company policies.
  • Ensures the proper personal protective equipment is available and personnel are properly trained in its use.
  • Investigates accidents, incidents, and near misses and identifies and eliminates root cause.
  • Completes and forwards accident report to laboratory management and Director, EH&S.
  • Conducts monthly facility inspections for compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations and procedures. Completes and forwards monthly inspection report to safety committee and laboratory management for corrective actions.
  • Conducts safety equipment checks to ensure proper working order and sufficient inventory.
  • Plans and tracks completion of monthly general awareness training sessions and compliance training, including new employee EH&S orientation.
  • Coordinates emergency response team to provide prompt medical attention and stabilize emergency situation. After emergency is over, assists in determining appropriate clean up procedures.
  • Participates in monthly EH&S conference call
  • Reviews and maintains safety data sheets for laboratory materials.
  • Coordinates the management and disposal of laboratory wastes.
  • Reviews and approves safety practices in standard operating procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains laboratory Integrated Contingency Plan.
  • Monitors air quality in facility, including monitoring fume hoods for proper operation and ventilation.
  • Monitors and maintains chemical inventory. Approves new chemical purchases.
  • Packages waste for disposal or return
  • Coordinates the proper storage, packing and disposal of laboratory wastes according to
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations.
  • Schedules waste pick-ups and prepare paperwork according to DOT, RCRA regulations and Treatment, Storage, Disposal Facility (TSDF) requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with Publicly Owned Treatment Works license requirements (Industrial Use Permit) for pH, volatile organic and metals.
  • Maintains waste disposal records (manifests, land ban forms, and certificates of destruction, POTW reports/documentation) in a stand-alone and legally defensible fashion.
  • Coordinate hazardous waste minimization program to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts weekly inspections of satellite accumulation areas and all hazardous waste storage areas. Submits reports to area leaders, hazardous waste representatives, and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Coordinator. Ensures corrective actions noted are completed. • Participates on the local safety committee as needed. • Packs drums for disposal (incineration).
  • Labpacks expired chemicals for disposal according to regulatory requirements.
  • Trouble-shoot equipment used in Hazwaste disposal (if appropriate).
  • Coordinates spill response activities including documentation for waste storage areas.
  • Maintains proper housekeeping in hazardous waste cage/storage area to facilitate safe and efficient use by laboratory personnel.
  • Develops and maintains an up-to-date RCRA contingency plan for the hazardous waste cage/storage area.
  • Inspects and monitors supplies of personal protective equipment and spill control equipment on a monthly basis. Orders supplies when needed.
  • Coordinates timely disposal of soil samples, segregates to facilitate cost-effective disposal, ships back to client or on to a TSDF for ultimate disposal.
  • Segregate and crush non-hazardous glass and laboratory trash for disposal to commercial landfill.
  • Maintains inventory, orders when necessary and receives/stores empty drums for lab disposal of solid and liquid waste.
  • Serves on in-house Emergency Response Team.
  • Functions as Site Emergency Coordinator in absence of EH&S Coordinator under guidance of Corporate EH&S Director.
  • Participates in professional associations dealing with waste disposal issues.
  • Maintain fleet maintenance and records in accordance with Eurofins's policy.
  • Setup yearly blanket purchase orders for vendors as directed by the BUMA.
  • Supervises and schedules courier staff to maintain proper courier services and coverage.
  • Serves as a backup to the shipping personnel with a working knowledge of Fedex and UPS computers, TALs bottle order module, sample receiving procedures, etc.
  • Codes invoices to be submitted to Accounts Payable as directed by BUMA.
  • Maintains and submits the weekly cash log to Accounts Payable.
  • Maintains the local petty cash account for miscellaneous expenses at the Cedar Falls Business Unit.
  • Attends training classes as needed.
  • Additional duties as delegated by BUMA.
Compensation range $19-21/Hr (DOE)

Eurofins Environment Testing (USA) provides a compensation range for informational purposes, the actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience and skill set, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location.

Qualifications

Basic Minimum Qualifications (BMQ):

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill or ability required.
  • Background in managing people.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Health & Safety Regulations.
  • Knowledge of waste disposal practices.
  • Broad knowledge of computers.
Education/Experience (BMQ):

Education: Associate degree in industrial hygiene, safety, chemistry, or science field or a minimum of 2 years laboratory experience. Experience: Minimum 1 year safety, hazardous waste and/or warehouse/shipping is helpful.

Certificates and/or Licenses (BMQ):
  • The following certificates and/or licenses can be completed after hire.
