Positions Available:
  • 2 Full-time, 9-month temporary positions at our West Boise location
  • 1 Full-time, 9-month temporary position at our Lander Street location
  • 1 Full-time permanent position at our Lander Street location
  • 1 Full-time permanent position at our Utility Maintenance facility near the airport

Essential Functions

Performs skilled construction, carpentry, drywall, painting, cabinetry, plumbing, masonry, roofing, maintenance, and repairs of industrial buildings and facilities. Installs and repairs doors, windows, cabinets, desks and other office furniture. Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools. (30%)

Performs skilled installation and maintenance of landscaping and facility grounds including mowing, trimming, pruning, pest control, removal and planting of trees. Installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems, fences, gates, concrete sidewalks, walkways and parking lots. Operates and maintains mowers and other related grounds equipment and tools. Applies fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides. (30%)

Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work environment. Performs janitorial duties. Cleans, maintains and restocks lunchrooms, restrooms and locker room facilities. Performs wash-down and cleaning of tanks and basins. Repairs and cleans floors, showers, sinks, toilets, walls, roofs, stairways and carpets. Collects trash and debris on facility grounds and empties and maintains trash receptacles. (20%)

Operates light to medium equipment to load and unload trucks, dig trenches, transport materials within a facility and perform snow removal. (10%)

Supports special projects and activities when assigned. May support activities at other divisional work locations as needed. Attends and completes assigned training as required to ensure compliance with city policy, and state and federal regulations. (10%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • 2 years of experience performing facilities maintenance and repairs including concrete patching and operating various hand and power tools
  • High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education/experience
Knowledge
  • General facilities maintenance to include minor electrical, plumbing, construction methods and safety standards
  • Hard surface maintenance and repair, general landscape care, trench construction
Ability
  • Perform varied facilities maintenance and cleaning
  • Safely operate a wide variety of equipment and tools including mowers and drills
  • Safely utilize related protective gear and safety equipment
  • Identify and prioritize additional tasks
  • Read blueprints
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of city employees, the general public and other organizations
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion
  • Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance, and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Capable of operating vehicles safely and having an acceptable driving record
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • 4 years of experience performing grounds and facilities maintenance including minor electrical, plumbing, and construction
  • Wastewater Operator Class I license
Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid state-issued driver's license
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
  • City of Boise background check processes including a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

Working Conditions

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely loud. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, wet and humid conditions, and areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, and work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Employees work in industrial areas near open tanks, ditches, on stairs, and on uneven surfaces and are subject to slip hazards caused by ice/snow in winter, wet floors, uneven and undeveloped work surfaces.
This position works evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Work may be performed/assigned at any of the city's public works utilities and may work at remote or isolated facilities a considerable distance from supporting resources.
