Faculty Position in Small Animal Emergency/Critical Care Medicine

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine announces an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Practice, Clinical or Tenure Track faculty positions in small animal emergency/critical care medicine. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree. Preference will be given to candidates that are board certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care or will be eligible to take the ACVECC certifying examination in 2023 or 2024. It is expected that the candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in patient management; service to clients and referring veterinarians; and teaching/mentoring of professional and graduate students.

Practice-track candidates will focus entirely on clinical service and teaching, with an expectation of 80-90% of time spent in clinical duty. There is no expectation for scholarly activity or teaching outside of the clinical setting. Clinical-track candidates will be assigned up to 60-70% time in clinics, including clinical teaching of students and advanced training of interns and residents. Sponsored research is not required for clinical track faculty, yet clinical research, publications or other scholarly activities to advance clinical veterinary medicine are encouraged. Tenure-track faculty will be given at least 50-60% off-clinic time to meet expectations for developing an extramurally funded research program that includes collaboration with other scientists, advising of graduate student research, and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

The appointee will be an addition to a program already supported by four faculty criticalists, seven residents and two emergency doctors in the Small Animal ECC Service, as well as equine ECC faculty members. The Department supports a faculty of over 75 clinical specialists, educators, and investigators along with extensive training programs for professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. The candidates will work in a comprehensive academic veterinary medical center with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment including digital radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, 3 Tesla MRI, 128 Slice CT, Interventional Radiology/Medicine suite, mechanical ventilation, high-flow oxygen therapy devices, hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, and dark field microcirculatory imaging. In addition, labs are taught in our Professional Skills Center also a state-of-the-art education and assessment resource, unique in veterinary education that includes almost 9,000 square feet of educational space purpose-built for teaching clinical and communication skills. VCPSC enhances patient care and client satisfaction by allowing students to practice their skills in this simulated environment before entering the workforce. Primary responsibilities include year-round clinical teaching of professional students, interns, and residents and patient care activities related to all aspects of small animal ECC medicine. Teaching responsibilities will also include participation in didactic lectures and laboratories. The successful candidates will share supervision of a full service, 24-hour, 40-cage intensive care unit, as well as a busy 24/7 emergency receiving service and verified trauma center (which sees approximately 10000 cases/year). The ICU is staffed with registered veterinary technicians (several with VTS ECC certification) with a mission for excellence in patient care. The ICU is currently managed in an open style with all specialty services providing primary patient care of the patients in the unit. It is anticipated the appointee will interact closely with the faculty and programs in all small animal clinical disciplines and the large animal ECC program. Faculty members are also expected to be involved in professional and community outreach, continuing education, committee service, and curriculum development.
