Open-Rank Faculty Position - Health Technology and/or Artificial Intelligence and Health for RST

Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism
Position
The Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism (RST) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for an open-rank, nine-month tenure-track faculty position in Recreation, Sport and Tourism related to health technology and/or artificial intelligence (AI) and health.

We seek candidates with an interdisciplinary research agenda in recreation, sport and/or tourism that addresses technology to promote health and well-being. Examples of research areas that align with this position include (but are not limited to): adoption of technologies, adaptive technologies, spatial analytics/geographic analysis, big data methods, especially those using (AI), and other AI and health technologies for health in the contexts of recreation, sport and tourism.

UIUC is hiring a cluster of faculty in the broadly themed area AI for Community Health to promote and support health and well-being. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with other faculty members hired as part of the cluster. The cluster will be supported by multiple research centers which will provide resources and support to develop this important research area. Participating centers include the Health Care Engineering Systems Center (HCESC) in the Grainger College of Engineering, the Center on Aging, Health, and Disability (CHAD) in the College of Applied Health Sciences, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), and the Cline Center for Advanced Social Research, among others.

This position also builds on the Department's interdisciplinary strengths in health and well-being, which is a pillar of engagement within the Department. The other three departmental pillars of engagement are organizational and community development; sustainable change; and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

The start date for this position will be August 16, 2024.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include collaborating with other faculty in the health technology and AI cluster, conducting research in health technology related to contexts of recreation, sport and tourism; building collaborative research partnerships with colleagues within the Department, College and various disciplines across campus; advising and directing student research including theses and dissertations; instructing undergraduate and graduate courses; contributing to the Department's curriculum; seeking and securing external funding for research; serving on Department, College, and University committees; engaging in professional and public service activities; and working to establish a welcoming and supportive culture that embraces diverse individual identities, fosters a culture of inclusion, and promotes equity in curricula, teaching, standards, behaviors, policies and practices.

Qualification

Applicants must demonstrate the following minimum qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in recreation, sport and/or tourism or related fields at the time of appointment.
- Evidence of a strong publication record in top-tier peer-reviewed scholarly journals.
- Evidence of the ability to secure or potential for securing external research funding.
- Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the RST Department.
- Ability to mentor doctoral and master's students.
- Ability to contribute to the university and the recreation, sport and tourism field through academic and public service/engagement.

The Department

Faculty and staff of the Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism (RST) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign work to advance knowledge to foster healthy lifestyles, environmental stewardship and sustainability, effective management and marketing of organizations, and social and economic development of communities (see www.rst.illinois.edu for additional information). The Department offers residential B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs, an online M.S. program, and houses the Office of Park and Recreation Resources.

The College

The RST Department is part of the College of Applied Health Sciences (see http://ahs.illinois.edu) and affiliated with the Center for Health, Aging, and Disability (see http://chad.illinois.edu). The College houses the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (http://www.disability.illinois.edu) (DRES) which includes the US Paralympic Training Site for Wheelchair Track Racing. The College also houses the Chez Veterans Center (https://ahs.illinois.edu/chez-veterans-center) which opened in 2015 to provide support services to empower student veterans with disabilities.

The Community

Urbana-Champaign (located 135 miles south of Chicago) combines natural Midwestern beauty with the cultural resources typically found in larger metropolitan areas.
Three downtown areas (Urbana, Champaign, and Campus town) provide vibrant public spaces with unique dining and entertainment options and the local community offers a thriving arts and culture atmosphere as well as varsity and community sports. Urbana-Champaign was rated #1 by Midwest Living magazine for the greatest food for a city with less than 750,000 population. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy 80 parks within the two communities with easy access to several large forest preserves and the Kickapoo Rail Trail in Champaign County (see www.visitchampaigncounty.org for additional information).

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic position, appointed on a 9-month basis. The expected start date is August 16, 2024. Salary is commensurate with experience.
