Under the direct supervision of the Perioperative nurse and the Team Leader, the Operating Room Assistant is responsible for transporting patients, cleaning ORs, maintaining a clean environment, moving equipment, delivery of specimens, second scrubbing PRN, and other duties as assigned. The ORA functions as a member of the Perioperative Nursing team who has specific knowledge, skills and training to work in an Operating Room Environment.
Material and Equipment ManagementRetrieval of specialty equipment (i.e. ICU beds, orthopedic beds)Assist in moving specialty equipment (i.e. TV equipment, monitors, laser equipment).Return equipment to designated locations.Write stock lists for O.R. rooms, set-up rooms, and autoclave areasPut away suppliesDistribute linenRemove broken stretchers from circulation, prepare equipment repair formsDeliver specimens to laboratoriesCollect and log specimens from refrigerator. Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent
Able to read, understand and write English
Successful completion of Hospital Orientation
Successful completion of Departmental Orientation and Training
Must be able to lift 40 pounds independently
Must be able to push stretcher with patient weighting 250 pounds independently
Must be able to stand for long periods of time (up to 6 hours)
Must be able to comprehend written directions for mixing cleaning supplies, and ordering supplies
Must be able to meet competencies of second scrub
Ambulatory Surgery setting, specifically and Operating Room environment which requires the wearing of surgical scrub attire which includes but is not limited to scrubs, hat, mask, gloves, goggles, booties, and gown. Fluctuation in temperature is frequent, as well as the handling of body fluids, sharps and tissue. Fast paced environment.
