Under the direct supervision of the Perioperative nurse and the Team Leader, the Operating Room Assistant is responsible for transporting patients, cleaning ORs, maintaining a clean environment, moving equipment, delivery of specimens, second scrubbing PRN, and other duties as assigned. The ORA functions as a member of the Perioperative Nursing team who has specific knowledge, skills and training to work in an Operating Room Environment.

  • Material and Equipment Management
  • Retrieval of specialty equipment (i.e. ICU beds, orthopedic beds)
  • Assist in moving specialty equipment (i.e. TV equipment, monitors, laser equipment).
  • Return equipment to designated locations.
  • Write stock lists for O.R. rooms, set-up rooms, and autoclave areas
  • Put away supplies
  • Distribute linen
  • Remove broken stretchers from circulation, prepare equipment repair forms
  • Deliver specimens to laboratories
  • Collect and log specimens from refrigerator. EXCEPTION: Delivery of intra-operative pathology/frozen section specimens is responsibility of circulation or scrub nurse.
  • Pick supplies for surgical procedures, i.e. as directed
  • Environment
  • Clean operating room, induction rooms, set-up areas, autoclave areas, scrub sink areas
  • Remove suction bottles, laundry bags, trash bags
  • Wash furniture
  • Make OR beds
  • Clean surfaces (walls, equipment, floors)
  • Replace full biohazardous needle boxes
  • Maintain clean corridors
  • Participate in shared duties
  • Cleans and stocks refrigerators
  • End of shift general cleanup
  • Desk area clean up
  • Elevator area clean up
  • Patient Care Activities
  • Function as second scrub
  • Transport patients
  • Tasks Supporting the Medication System
  • Responsible for cleaning medication storage locations.
  • Self Development / Customer Service
  • Collaborates with Nursing Director, Nurse Manager, OR Resource Nurse and Nursing Practice Specialist to identify and meet learning needs.

  • Ambulatory Surgical Center Responsibilities

  • a. Contributes to the team philosophy of high-quality performance and efficiency standards.

    b. Works collaboratively with Surgeons and the Medical Director to accommodate their needs and priorities in caring for the ambulatory surgical patient

    Qualifications
    High school graduate or equivalent

    Able to read, understand and write English

    Successful completion of Hospital Orientation

    Successful completion of Departmental Orientation and Training

    Must be able to lift 40 pounds independently

    Must be able to push stretcher with patient weighting 250 pounds independently

    Must be able to stand for long periods of time (up to 6 hours)

    Must be able to comprehend written directions for mixing cleaning supplies, and ordering supplies

    Must be able to meet competencies of second scrub

    Ambulatory Surgery setting, specifically and Operating Room environment which requires the wearing of surgical scrub attire which includes but is not limited to scrubs, hat, mask, gloves, goggles, booties, and gown. Fluctuation in temperature is frequent, as well as the handling of body fluids, sharps and tissue. Fast paced environment.
