Job Title: Pit Steward Helper, Bowman Gray Stadium

Department: Winston Salem Speedway

SUMMARY:

The Pit Stewards Helper plays a vital supporting role in assisting the Pit Steward in overseeing pit area operations, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and facilitating smooth and efficient pit stops during races. The Pit Steward Helper assists Pit Stewards with any errands they may need accomplished, including but not limited to hailing drivers, getting starting lineups, and running officials notes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Assist the Pit Steward in monitoring activities within the pit area, ensuring that teams and personnel adhere to safety protocols, equipment regulations, and pit lane procedures during races and practice sessions.
  • Assist with the setup and maintenance of pit equipment, including fueling stations, tire changers, air hoses, and other tools and supplies necessary for pit stops, ensuring that all equipment is operational and readily accessible.
  • Help enforce safety regulations and guidelines within the pit area, such as fire safety protocols, fueling procedures, and personal protective equipment requirements, to minimize the risk of accidents or injuries during pit stops.
  • Aid in coordinating pit stops during races, communicating with teams and drivers to ensure timely entry and exit from the pit lane, and assisting with pit lane assignments, pit stall selection, and pit lane speed monitoring.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with pit crews, race officials, track personnel, and other stakeholders, relaying instructions, updates, and safety advisories as directed by the Pit Steward.
  • Provide assistance to drivers and teams as needed during pit stops, including guiding drivers into their pit stalls, assisting with driver changes, windshield cleaning, and other tasks to facilitate efficient pit operations.
  • Assist in responding to on-track incidents or emergencies that occur near the pit area, following established procedures for evacuating personnel, securing equipment, and coordinating with track safety personnel as necessary.
  • Help maintain cleanliness and orderliness within the pit area, including the removal of debris, spilled fluids, or other hazards, and assisting with post-race cleanup and equipment storage as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); previous experience working in a motorsports environment, such as a race team, trackside service provider, or event support staff; familiarity with racing terminology, pit stop procedures, and common racing equipment; basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with automotive tools and equipment used for serving race cars, such as impact wrenches, jacks, and tire pressure gauges; or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively as part of a team, taking direction from the Pit Steward and supporting other pit area personnel to ensure the smooth operation of races.
  • Keen observation skills and attention to detail to identify potential safety hazards, equipment issues, or procedural errors that may impact pit stop performance or race outcomes.
  • Clear and concise verbal communication skills, along with the ability to follow instructions and relay information accurately and effectively to drivers, crew members, and other team members.
  • Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, in alignment with the race schedule and event calendar.
  • Dependable and punctual, with a commitment to fulfilling assigned shifts and responsibilities according to the race schedule and event calendar.
