Job Description

The Plant Operator 1 provides excellent service to our customers, shareholders and employees by successfully performing all functions necessary to ensure the water quality and regulatory compliance in the production of water for distribution to customers. The Plant Operator will provide support in the following areas:

  • Operation and maintenance of all water supply pumping and treatment facilities and equipment
  • Regulatory compliance with State of Maine Drinking Water
  • Regulations and the Safe Drinking Water Act
  • Customer satisfaction and water quality
  • Watershed and wellhead protection and land management

The Plant operator will perform a wide variety of duties and tasks related to operating and maintaining a public water treatment system, including:

  • Operation, repair and maintenance of all treatment plant equipment, SCADA control system and pumping stations.
  • Inspection and housekeeping of all facilities to insure a safe, clean and presentable water production environment.
  • Collection of all necessary water samples required for compliance with federal and state regulations and for operational analyses.
  • Collection and reporting of all water production and water quality information necessary for regulatory compliance and company records.
  • Select, order, receive, dispense, and record the use of water treatment chemicals. Insure availability and distribution of proper safety equipment and MSDS information for chemical handling.
  • Maintain and administer an Emergency Response Plan for each facility and train others for implementation of the plan if necessary.
  • Monitor water supplies and manage lake levels and well levels to insure uninterrupted service to customers and efficient use of water resources.
  • Implement watershed and wellhead protection programs, including risk identification and assessment, land use monitoring, forestry management, land acquisition, public access policies and routine inspections.
  • Monitor regulatory activity that may impact treatment techniques or current operations at water production facilities.
  • Assist in planning for capital improvements at each facility in anticipation of new water quality regulations.
  • Assist and train other operators and standby duty personnel.
  • Be available for standby duty and on-call emergency response on the monthly schedule established by the Chief Plant Operator.
  • Respond to water quality concerns from customers.
  • Grounds keeping at company facilities and over mains, services and other areas.

This includes rules and regulations in the Company Safety Manual, OSHA regulations and other state, federal, or governing body's rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as assigned.

This role will require regular travel to and work at the Berwick Water Treatment Plant in Berwick, ME.


Minimum Qualification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Must have great communication skills
  • Proficiency in compliance with state and federal regulations required
  • Must have proficiency in mechanical aptitude (working with pumps, generators, and hydraulics)
  • Must have high proficiency in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and SCADA systems
  • Must have ability to work standby rotation
  • Must have general office software skillset
