Allegheny College, a small selective national liberal arts college, invites applications for the position of Public Safety Officer. There are full-time and part-time non-exempt positions which report to the Director of Public Safety. The Office of Public Safety upholds the Student Code of Conduct, including all applicable standards and policies, and local, state and federal laws. The position is designed to maintain a safe, peaceful, and orderly community through education, enforcement, emergency response, and services delivered 24-hours a day, 365 days per year.

The following are essential duties and responsibilities for this position: Collaborate with and support Public Safety personnel and members of the Allegheny community to foster and maintain a positive, honorable, fiscally prudent, efficient, and professional work environment. Complete building security checks, foot/vehicle patrols, officer report writing; parking enforcement, fleet management, including vehicle check off sheets, key control, daily briefing meetings, officer activity logs, scheduling; service requests, and other designated duties. Enforce the Student Code of Conduct and all applicable local, state and federal laws in partnership with the Residence Life & Dean of Students Office. Investigate and write reports documenting campus incidents, and coordinate referrals to the Student Conduct Office. Perform campus patrol functions on foot and via vehicle on college owned/leased and adjacent property. Participate and develop competency in the operation of all radios, scanners, switchboard operations, and alarm systems. Enforce parking regulations on campus property.

Qualifications include: the ability and desire to promote the College's academic mission and willingness to adhere to the College's Student Code of Conduct and local, state and federal laws. In addition to being a Pennsylvania resident, the candidate must demonstrate completion of an Act 120 training program or an equivalent police academy training program, such as the Pennsylvania State Police Academy Basic Cadet Training Program. The candidate must also be able to be appointed as a Private Police Officer under Act 501. Possess CPR and basic first aid certificates, strong interpersonal and communication skills, a pleasant disposition and the ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations, as well as the skills to deescalate tense or volatile situations. The ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment while handling multiple/simultaneous confidential responsibilities in stressful situations. Be able to work a wide variety of shifts, including late night/early morning hours and weekends and holidays, possibly working extended shifts on short notice and/or being called into work outside normal scheduled hours. Preference will be given to candidates who have military, training, and knowledge of crime prevention techniques in a college or university setting. A bachelor's degree is preferred, and a high school diploma or GED is a must. Must have Pennsylvania Act 120 training and certification or similar training and certification at time of hiring. Preference is given for military experience, a college degree, or prior police, safety and security, and/or law enforcement experience in a college or university setting.
