Department Summary:

CAAAM is the Center for Agile and Adaptive Additive Manufacturing. CAAAM looks at additive manufacturing which includes materials, science, cybersecurity, data analytics, logistics, and supply chain. Established in 2019 by the Texas State legislature with $10 million in funding and recently renewed through 2025, CAAAM conducts next-generation research, education, and workforce training in additive manufacturing. CAAAM's Institute for Transformative Education in Additive Manufacturing - or ITEAM - provides courses, seminars, workshops, symposia, in-lab training sessions, and summer camps for industry and community colleges.

Position Overview:

University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Scientific Instrument Technician to join our team. This position is responsible for installing, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, modifying, designing, and fabricating instruments and equipment used for scientific experiments in UNT's Additiive Manufactuing Laboratory (AML). Performs demonstrations and training for students and faculty on proper operation of equipment in the AML. Helps students, post-doctoral researchers, faculty and external collaborators, in executing specific jobs on 3D printing/additive manufacturing of metals for sponsored research projects. Sets up laboratory exercises for courses related to AM. In addition the following specific requirements are associated with the position: * Perform mechanical and electrical layout, construction, modification, testing, adjustment, calibration, and preventive maintenance on simple and complex additive manufacturing (AM) equipment for use in scientific research or instruction. * Perform trouble-shooting of AM equipment and related pre- and post-processing equipment in the AML. Reads schematic diagrams in designing or repairing apparatus and equipment. Uses various testing devices to locate and evaluate circuit voltages and resistance.Rebuilds AM equipment to improve or change its operation, as required. * Purchases supplies and parts for equipment in AML. Responsible for asset inventor in the AML. * Set up laboratory exercises for students in university courses involving AM components. * Help with senior design projects related to AM of metals. * Perform safety inspections and observes safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed in the AML.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and five years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of related tools, equipment, materials, and other devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex drawings, charts and designs.
  • Ability to work from ideas and to draw own sketches and designs.
  • Ability to make varied mathematical computations involved in designing and constructing apparatus and equipment.
  • Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to design, trouble-shoot and maintain complex equipment.
  • Ability, Education, and Skills to operate highly complex lab machines.
  • Ability to train others on the use of complex machines.
  • Ability to supervise employee appropriately.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor Degree in related field and three years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday; 8am - 5pm; occasional weekends required
