The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an experienced and dedicated professional as its next Vice President for Academic Affairs. This individual will lead GSSM's academic mission by providing strategic oversight of the institution's academic programs and by developing and implementing programs and policies that define curriculum content to meet institutional goals and objectives. Reporting directly to the President and serving as a member of the executive leadership team, the Vice President oversees over 70 employees and works collaboratively with internal and external constituencies to develop a robust academic program plan that supports GSSM's strategic plan goals and the overall quality of its educational program. 


This is a permanent, full-time position in Hartsville, South Carolina, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. The salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience. Review of applications will begin immediately, with a start date no later than July 1, 2024.

GSSM is nationally recognized for the quality of its advanced STEM, humanities, student research, and international programs.  Our faculty and staff share a passion for their disciplines and a commitment to inspire and lead students to achieve their best while fostering the joy of learning.  GSSM is a public high school serving 11th-12th grade students residentially and 10th-12th grades through virtual programs.  GSSM's Outreach Center engages over 8,000 elementary and middle school students through various STEM educational programs around the state in partnership with several school districts.  

Required Qualifications

  • An advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in science, math, engineering or related field; 
  • At least five years of secondary or higher education administrative experience; and,
  • At least five years of secondary or higher education teaching experience.

The significant areas of responsibility for this position include:

  1. Coordinating activities across all academic programs by working with supervisors in the institution's Residential and Virtual programs, the Registrar, and the directors of Research and Inquiry, College Counseling and Advising, and Student Success.
  2. Providing oversight of the faculty hiring process, ensuring the appropriate scheduling of faculty across courses and programs, and managing the instructor evaluation process. 
  3. Reviewing and revising the academic policy sections of the student handbook and course catalogs and aiding in the revision of employee handbooks. 
  4. Collaborating with the supervisors of academic programs to develop the academic schedule and coordinating with the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction to oversee the institution's Curriculum Committee and update the course catalogs for all programs. 
  5. Working cooperatively with parents, students, staff, and counselors to identify and resolve academic discipline issues.
  6. Collaborating with faculty, staff, and students in an intentional and purposeful manner to promote engagement and a positive culture that supports the mission and values of the institution.
